2β pot without drainage
Last watered 2 weeks ago
Once you start, youβll love it so much you wonβt be able to stop! It feels so good to get your hands in the dirt. With cactus, first things first: you want a pot that is a bit smaller than that- maybe an inch or two larger than the base. I only use terra cotta with drainage holes with my cacti because they are prone to root rot if the soil stays wet too long. Secondly, choose a soil that is specific for cacti and succulents- it will be gritty and well draining.
What you need: I have a pair of gloves that are a thick leather to prevent spines going in my hands, but I always end up with one for some reason!
Terra cotta pot
Soil for cacti
A little scoop of some kind.
How:
Gently loosen the other edge of the soil with a tool, lift the cactus out, and gently brush off soil around the roots. You can even use a toothbrush to brush them off.
Scoop some of your new soil in the bottom of the new pot, pop your cactus in there, and backfill with more soil! Stick it in a sunny window and youβre done!
The one thing I didnβt say to do is water- donβt water yet! Cacti need some time in the new soil to get established before watering or theyβll rot. I usually wait 3-4 weeks to water.
Hope this helps! Be sure to @ me in the comments if something doesnβt make sense!

@LavishSuriana2 I agree with everything @MamaLinne said! π«Άβ₯οΈβοΈπΈπ»π΅
@MamaLinne where are you getting these smaller and not deep pots from? Iβve been looking and I do find terracotta but they are so deep for some of my succulents. I even thought to fill the bottom with rocks and add soil on top of the rocks but then Iβve heard horror stories about that. I just want some little pots π
@Sonja we have a big plant nursery here with a huge pot selection and I spend wayyy to much time there lol! I did a quick amz search for βtiny terra cotta potsβ and they do have some that range from 2-3β! https://a.co/d/04i7QOFq
@MamaLinne Iβm actually so excited to go buy a new pot!! π€
@LavishSuriana2 atta girl! Post pics of the results! Donβt forget the gloves! I just spend a week digging a spine out of my finger, ask @DreamMachine ! ππͺ
@LavishSuriana2 Itβs true, Deb did π @MamaLinne π Ouch!
And just because Sonja @Sonja mentioned it, it is true that putting a layer of rocks on the bottom of the pot is not a good idea. It only reduces the amount of space in your pot and can keep things too wet around the roots. Just fill the pot with your cactus soil (which you can amend with more perlite or pumice etc. A lot of bagged mixes dont have enough aeration in them for cactus and succulents even though itβs a cactus/succulent soil.)
Good luck! Post pics when youβre done! π
