Trying to care for a plant for my friend, where in the world do I start? 😭
Last watered 9 months ago
Yikes ðŸ˜ą That looks like a perfect example of when it's best to chop and start over. Those leaves are toast from either underwatering or overwatering. My first guess is overwatering, since according to the plant card it's in a pot without drainage. It'll also need to be moved to a pot with drainage holes if it has any chance of surviving. Cut off all the dead stuff, move to a new pot with fresh, well-draining soil, place somewhere with adequate sunlight (a north-facing window should be ok), and ONLY water when the soil has completely dried out.
@stephonicle the pot has 1 drainage hole but the roots are growing out of it and blocking the drainage probably. How far down should I chop?
@AngelYerbasanta cut it down to the point where there is healthy plant tissue. Use scissors or pruning shears that have been sterilized with 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol, and make the cuts at a 45° angle. If the roots are coming out of the drainage hole, it's definitely ready for a larger pot. Just make sure the new pot isn't more than 2-3" bigger than its current pot. A pot that's too big can lead to overwatering and root rot. A good soil mix is something like succulent/cacti soil mixed with extra perlite (3 parts soil, 1 part perlite).
@stephonicle okay thanks. Should i bother fertilizing after i cut it down?
@AngelYerbasanta fertilizing an unhealthy plant will do more harm than good. Best to wait until it's back on its feet and thriving 😉
