Help! New plant parent looking for some answers 😩! I’ve been patiently waiting for my monstera pinnatipartita to grow a new leaf, and this was starting to come out. Could the new leaf be rotting before it even emerged? (I pulled it out to look at it) What do I do? #NewPlantMom #NewGrowth
3ft to light, indirect
4” pot with drainage
Last watered 11 months ago
@SoulfullyBlue62 plant parenting really humbles us fast I learned it the hardest way Monique…. New leaves are basically plant babies in swaddles. You cannot rush them They’re not IKEA drawers they don’t slide out when stuck. (even if we wish they came with step-by-step instructions just like IKEA stuff). If it doesn’t glide out on its own, it’s not ready. Forcing it = heartbreak. They’re fragile like my will to attend Monday meetings. Just keep her warm, watered when dry, and a bit more humid than my boss’s attitude…. Sorry I’m a bit frustrated from work today…owth takes time. She may bounce back… or she might ghost you. Either way, you’ve earned your stripes as a true plant parent…. but either way, you’re now officially a plant parent with war stories….. We’ve all had a leaf funeral or two. Welcome to the plant parent club :) .
@JungleDreamer Thanks for the reply. I only forced it out for the picture since I saw the black starting to poke out. That’s when I saw it going all the way down into the stem. I was worried how it would affect the rest of the plant 🥺. I put it back right after the picture, but I’m not sure what to do now.
@Araceae @JungleDreamer I promise I don’t force new leaves to come out on all my plants. I only forced this one out for the picture when I saw the black starting to poke out, and put it right back afterwards. That’s when I saw it going all the way down into the stem, and was unsure what to do. Will it still come out on its own if it’s rotting all the way down to the node?
@ExecAudreyficus Thanks! That must be what it was from. I have been misting the leaves not even thinking about water getting trapped in there.
@SoulfullyBlue62 yes, it will come out by itself eventually. If you give it a gentle tug it might come out quite easily
@JungleDreamer love your post. 🥰
@SoulfullyBlue62 You totally did the right thing checking, Monique that black tip looked suspicious, like the one soggy fry in your takeout bag that should’ve been good but now smells weird. If the damage stops at the leaf and the base still feels firm (no mush, no smell), it’s like catching a bad haircut before it ruins your whole look. Snip that leaf off with clean scissors and keep the crown dry no spa day steams or water pooling up top. New growth should still come through if the crown’s healthy. Plants don’t give up that easy, especially not over one dramatic leaf. Let her chill, sip water only when dry, and she’ll serve her comeback when ready.
Do not mist your plants ;~; it's actually pretty bad to do. It doesn't raise humidity for very long and it only makes it easier for mold and rot to attack the plant. It could also burn the plant if the water is collected on a surface that gets strong light.
For raising humidity you can get a humidifier, group with other plants, and put it in the bathroom while you take a shower.

@Araceae @ExecAudreyficus @JungleDreamer @AlertGoatsbeard Thank you all for the help! I’m definitely taking notes, and learning from this 😅. I was able to remove most of it. It went too deep for me to remove it all without ripping the stem. It was stiff at the tip and mushy the rest of the way down. I also repotted it, and a lot of the roots were starting to rot too so I cut off the dead parts. I’m going to leave it alone, and hope for the best now. No more misting either, just wiping the leaves from now on.
@MariSass I’ll try that too
