Did y’all see that Planterina went out of biz? I had ordered from them a few times and I liked looking at their inventory. But when then they started offing such huge discounts in the normal course of business, I sensed something way awry. I never really watched anything other than her short instagram clips. That must have been so hard to be so public and have that happen.
Oh I never had the pleasure of ordering from them but that is sad :(
I hope Amanda still does videos. I love her energy.
@sarahsalith yea I enjoyed her creativity in her instagram clips. I don’t have the attention span for YouTube, although I read summer raynes Oakes book and enjoy her channel. And I recently stumbled upon the refreshingly and irreverent Nick Alexander phytosexual
Wow thank you for sharing @TexanExpat I had no idea! I’m asking around in the industry to learn more. The last 2 years have been rough on online plant retailers as pandemic tailwinds have subsided, and cost of advertising has gone up.
@alex I was surprised but not surprised. I come from a family of entrepreneurs and my mom had chain of sunglasses stores with her partner who was the OG National Supervisor for sunglasses hut…I guess I had some intuition given my experience with the challenges of small businesses. When they started having such large discounts on a routine basis I was a little concerned because as a business it compromises the consumers experience. After a while with such discounts, you can never raise your prices again because who will pay the full price when the expectation is that more often than not you’re going to have discount? When the inventory started to expand in addition—or to me it seemed like it expanded—it evidenced that now not only were they trying to increase volume of sales by lower prices, but also increased selection to further drive volume seemed a little incoherent to me if cash flow was an issue that led to discounts in the first place and if that wasn’t working …perhaps increasing selection was another Hail Mary kind of indicator to me at least. Or perhaps lower prices were driving sales but ultimate not sustainably. Or maybe she got burned out. Sometimes I look at these influencers who may make good money but not enough money for the price of the problems that can come along with it. I hope everything works out for her I like her energy
Very apt analysis @TexanExpat!
