How to Water Peace Lily
Spathiphyllum wallisii
Reviewed by Kiersten Rankel M.S.
Quick Answer
Water your Peace lily every 5–7 days in spring and summer when the top inch of soil feels dry. Stretch to every 8–12 days in winter, never bone-dry.
Peace lilies are dramatic about thirst. They collapse in a heap and bounce back within hours of a soak. Don’t use the wilt as a cue. Repeated stress wears roots down.

How to Water Your Peace Lily
Soak the soil deeply, then let it drain. Peace lilies want even moisture but rot just as fast as any aroid if water sits in the saucer.
1
Pour room-temperature water at the soil line, around the base of the clump. Water on the leaves is fine but not necessary.
2
Keep pouring slowly until water runs from the drainage holes. That confirms the whole rootball is soaked, not just the top.
3
Empty the saucer after 10 minutes so the roots aren’t sitting in standing water.
4
Lift the pot a few days later. As it gets light, you’re close to the next watering.
Should You Water Your Peace Lily Today?
Always check before you pour. Peace lilies wilt dramatically when thirsty and recover quickly, but constant rebound watering wears the roots down over time.
Hold off
Leaves held up firm and glossy
Stalks standing tall and rigid
Top inch of soil still feels damp
Soil sits tight against the pot wall
Pot feels heavy when lifted
Ready for water
Top inch of soil dry to the touch
Whole plant beginning to droop
Stalks softening at the base
Visible gap between soil and pot wall
Pot feels noticeably light
If Something Looks Off
Wilting on a Peace lily can mean dry or soggy. The soil tells the real story, since both states show the same drama on the leaves.
Underwatered
Soil
Bone-dry and pulled away from the pot wall
Leaves
Whole plant collapses outward in a heap
Pace
Dramatic wilt that recovers within 2 to 4 hours of a deep soak
Next steps
Set the pot in a basin of room-temperature water for 20 minutes so the rootball rehydrates from below
Drain fully and return to its usual spot
Expect the leaves to lift back up within a few hours
Tighten your cadence by a day or two so the next wilt doesn’t happen. Repeated dramatic wilts damage the fine roots
Overwatered
Soil
Stays dark and damp for over a week with a sour smell
Stem
Stalks soft mushy or blackening at the soil line
Leaves
Lower leaves yellow all over and feel limp not crisp
Pace
Wilting that does not recover even after watering
Next steps
Stop watering and move to a bright airy spot
If you see fungus gnats hovering around the soil, the mix has stayed too wet
Slide the plant out of the pot and trim any dark mushy roots back to firm white tissue
Repot in fresh moisture-retaining mix in a clean pot with drainage holes
Wait until the top inch of soil is dry before the next watering
Got More Questions?
Why does my Peace lily wilt right after I water it?
If your Peace lily wilts after watering rather than perking up, the roots are likely rotted from a previous soggy stretch. Damaged roots can’t take up water no matter how much soil moisture is available.
Slide it out of the pot and check. Healthy roots are white and firm. Mushy brown roots need trimming and the plant needs fresh dry mix and a recovery stretch.
Can I use tap water on a Peace lily?
Yes for most homes. Peace lilies are far less fussy than calatheas about chlorine. They can show brown tips from fluoride or hard water over time.
If the tips keep crisping, switch to filtered or rainwater for a month and check the next set of leaves. Improvement shows up slowly.
How long can I leave a Peace lily while I’m on vacation?
About a week. Peace lilies are thirsty and start wilting within 6 to 8 days in average household conditions.
Deep-soak the morning you leave, move slightly out of bright light, and ask someone to check it after 5 days for anything beyond a week.
Are self-watering pots a good idea for Peace lilies?
Mixed bag. Peace lilies like consistent moisture, which suits a self-watering pot, but the lower roots can rot in a constant reservoir.
Fill the reservoir less often than the pot suggests and let it run dry for a day or two between fills. Use a chunky moisture-retaining mix to give roots oxygen.
Why aren’t my Peace lily’s flowers white anymore?
Peace lily flowers naturally fade from white to green to brown over a few weeks. That’s the normal life of a single flower, not a problem.
If yours hasn’t flowered at all in a long time, the cause is light, not water. Move it closer to a bright window.
Why are leaf tips browning even when I water on time?
Brown tips on a Peace lily usually mean fluoride or chlorine buildup from tap water, dry air, or too much fertilizer. The plant tells you slowly, and the symptom builds up over months.
Flush the soil with rainwater or filtered water once a month, run a humidifier nearby, and dial back fertilizer if you’ve been feeding heavily.
