Drummond's Maple

How to Water Drummond's Maple

Acer rubrum
Reviewed by Kiersten Rankel M.S.
Quick Answer
Water Drummond's Maple deeply every 5–7 days during the first two summers, when the top 2 inches of soil are dry. Established trees only need water during long dry stretches.
This is the southern wetland red maple, adapted to seasonally flooded soils. Young trees still establish faster with steady watering.

Your Watering Rhythm Across the Year
Soil dries faster in the growing season, which varies by region. Slow down watering in the off-season to avoid overwatering.

How to Water Your Drummond's Maple
Water deeply at the drip line, not at the trunk. Drummond's Maple roots run shallow and wide, so soaking the outer ring around the canopy reaches more feeder roots than puddling at the base.
1
Water in the morning so leaves and surface soil dry before evening. This reduces tar spot and other leaf fungal problems common to red maples.
2
Apply water around the drip line, the area under the outer edge of the branches. Avoid spraying the trunk directly.
3
Soak slowly until water reaches 8 to 10 inches deep. A drip hose run at low flow for 30 to 45 minutes works better than a quick spray.
4
Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep with hardwood bark out to the drip line, kept a hand-width back from the trunk to prevent rot.
Should You Water Your Drummond's Maple Today?
Young red maples wilt fast in drought and damaged leaves usually drop instead of recovering. Check soil moisture 4 to 6 inches down before deciding the tree is fine.
Hold off
Leaves look firm and uniformly colored
New shoot tips green and upright
Soil 4 inches down still cool and moist
Mulch underneath still damp
Recent rain in the last few days
Ready for water
Leaves look dull and slightly drooped
Edges of mature leaves curling upward
Soil 4 inches down dry and crumbly
Mulch dry through to the soil
Whole canopy wilting in afternoon sun
If Something Looks Off
Maples respond to both drought and waterlogged roots with leaf scorch and early color. The soil below the surface tells you which problem you have.
Underwatered
Soil
Dry and crumbly several inches down with mulch loose and powdery
Leaves
Brown crispy edges that progress inward, oldest leaves first
Pace
Gradual decline over a week that stabilizes within a day of a deep soak
Next steps
Set a slow drip hose at the drip line and run for 45 to 60 minutes so water soaks 8 inches deep
Repeat the deep soak every 3 to 4 days for the next two weeks while the tree recovers
Refresh mulch out to the drip line if it has thinned in summer heat
Existing scorched leaves won't green back up, but the tree still photosynthesizes from green parts. Wait for next year's flush to judge full recovery
Overwatered
Soil
Stays soggy or shows standing water days after rain
Stem
Bark at the base discolored or with fungal bracket growth
Leaves
Whole leaves turning yellow uniformly with premature drop
Pace
Branch-by-branch dieback that worsens even in dry weather
Next steps
Stop supplemental watering and pull mulch back from the trunk to let the soil surface dry
Check the planting site drains within 24 hours after rain. If water pools, the tree is in a wet spot
For container trees, slip the rootball out, trim any black mushy roots back to firm pale tissue, and repot in fresh well-draining mix
Wait at least 2 weeks before watering again, and let the top 3 inches of soil dry between waterings going forward
Got More Questions?
How long does my Drummond's Maple need supplemental water before it's established?
Plan on 2 full growing seasons of regular deep watering. After that the root system is wide and deep enough to handle most weather without help.
Signs of an established tree include holding leaves through August heat without obvious wilting and pushing strong new shoot growth in spring.
Why are my maple's leaves turning red in summer?
Early red color in midsummer is usually drought or root stress, not normal fall color. The tree is shutting down sugar production to conserve water.
Deep-water once a week and mulch the drip line. If a single branch turns red while the rest stays green, check that branch for pest damage or girdling.
Can I water my maple at the trunk with a basin?
It works for very young trees in their first season. Build a 4 inch soil ring at the drip line, not the trunk, and fill it twice in one watering.
After the first season switch to drip-line watering. Trunk-zone watering encourages roots to stay too close to the surface.
Does my Drummond's Maple need more water than a standard red maple?
Drummond's is the southern wetland variant and naturally tolerates wet soils better than the upland red maple. In dry sites it needs about the same as any red maple.
If you have a poorly-drained spot where most maples struggle, this is the cultivar to pick. In a normal yard treat it like any other red maple.
How long can my maple go without water for a vacation?
An established tree handles 2 to 3 weeks easily. Young trees in their first 2 years need a deep soak before any 7+ day absence.
For container maples, group them with other plants and move out of direct afternoon sun before you leave. They dry out 2 to 3 times faster than in-ground trees.
Why is the bark splitting on my young maple?
Frost crack from rapid temperature swings, not water. Winter sun heats the south-facing bark above freezing during the day, then it refreezes at night and splits.
Wrap young trunks with tree wrap from late November through March for the first 3 winters. Watering does not fix or prevent this.
