Mine is very picky. If it lacks even a drop of water, it does. If it gets a little too much water, it dies. If it gets too much or too little sun, it dies. Not a very easy plant so I wouldn’t recommend it for beginners.

This is a Calathea Vittata plant I bought online. I was searching for plants that can survive indoors with medium to low light. So this beautiful plant came up in my search.
I need suggestions to take care of her bc the gnats are in her soil and I’m not sure if she in the right pot. So any suggestions...... thanks!

Buy a humidifier! Or crowd it in with other plants to help maintain some humidity. Do not let it dry out, but do not water too frequently either. Pick up some soil and pinch it between your fingers. It should be a little moist, but no water should squeeze out. That is when you water. Everyone says not to use tap water, but tap is fine if you have good water in your area.

I love this plant it is absolutely beautiful, but it is a huge pain in the ass. They need lots of humidity and attention.

I haven’t quite learned the trick to this plant yet. I’ve been experimenting with placement and humidity since I got it. It’s dark leaves are easy to burn and needs Indirect light. I often see mold or gnats every two weeks when I treat for pests. I also cleaned mold from the soil twice with hydrogen peroxide. The sizzle was weirdly satisfying.

I LOVE THIS PLANT! It’s so beautiful and adds a elegant touch to any room, it’s also not super fickle and is relatively easy to care for with beautiful results. Also makes new leaves quite often and it’s very interesting to watch the process since the leaves slowly unravel themselves. Only downside is whatever side is facing the light, the leaves will all cluster together in a straight line to get maximum sunlight which is a fascinating and practical survival skill but sometimes takes away for the tropical look. I try to rotate mine every day to spread out the leaves, not a issue with the plant just something to point out. Mine lives in front of a window which is why this is so frequent, keep in mind these plants enjoy lots of indirect sunlight and are happiest being moist but not sitting in water. Another plus to this plant is how it’s the perfect size for any space, big enough to make a statement but easy to put anywhere

Keep it humid and semi damp (I heavily mist moss on top to keep moisture in and it’s showing new growth), relatively bright light.

Keep in comfortable climate with enough water to keep the soil moist. It’s very low maintenance.

Been about 9 months since that ^ photo was taken and we’re down to 2.5 leaves. She gets the front row seat at the window, she gets lots of humidity, she gets BOTTLED WATER, and all the love in my heart and this is her response.

What a drama queen. Two stars purely because what leaves she does have are beautiful.

Maybe it’s Colorado weather, but Calathea are so challenging to keep healthy and happy in the dry air.

This is a stunning, but high maintenance plant! I’ve had her for a little over two months, and she has been consistently putting out new leaves. I do not water often, maybe once or twice a month, but I collect rainwater for her specifically - they are sensitive to chlorine in tap water. She loves humidity, and I live somewhere VERY humid, so I just open the windows for her often. I have her sitting directly in a North-facing window and she “prays” nightly. 💕 Let’s hope I can keep her on track!
