Calling the Greg recovery team!! Alocasia in ICU! πŸš‘πŸš¨πŸ₯πŸ†˜ #RottenRootPorn
So lately my #AlocasiaPolly has been dropping leaves one by one! So I go to maybe repot because maybe the pot is too big idk πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ and it smelled like a DEAD RAT no lie!! πŸ€ 🀒

Upon taking the plant out of the pot, the roots literally fell off!! Also both plant clumps were grown in a bag! (Tsk tsk #thesill) I cut the bags off and cleaned the roots and did a water/peroxide soak and removed all the rotten-ness that I could !

So I now have them in distilled water and my questions are: Will they make it? Can they grow in water? How can I get those baby corms to transform?

I want them to get stronger and grow some roots before I put them in soil again. @sarahsalith you warned me!! @RJG whatchu think? @melodey you have magical ways with corms, teach me your ways!

Ohhh my heart!!! Not the Polly!

I'm super big on Sphagnum Moss! Just make sure it's not too wet.

Do you have a prop box? I created one by putting two clear bottom parts of mini storage bins together. Lol... It's worked perfectly to create a humid protected environment.

Just make sure you vent your box every couple of days and it stays moist in there....I did a couple mistings when it seems to get more on the dry side.

It took my corms about 70 days to get where they're at now. I started with 10 corms and ended with 6 live plants.

Imo I would also put your recovering Polly in sphagnum moss just make sure the roots arent too packed in there if you choose to do so.

(Edit: maybe add a little bit of rooting powder to recovering Polly to encourage new root growth?)
@melodey I don’t have any!! 😩 do you think they’ll be okay until I get some tomorrow? I have the corms in a lunch meat plastic container now with a layer of water about halfway up the corms. I have 13 corms.
Looks like you got plenty of croms if the worst comes true. I second everything @melodey said!

also tagging in @jcPlantProper cause she takes care of all the alocasias!!
@babyfiretiger13 that's actually perfect from what I've seen for corms!
these are my two corms you can see the one in the back growing !
@babyfiretiger13 I'm not too sure about water 😬 πŸ˜…. I would put less water in your jars though...just above the roots, and try to get some of that Sphagnum Moss as soon as you can.

With my M. Deliciosa prop I took from root (it wasn't doing good) I put water just about where it started to root and it's doing well. Also used rooting powder a couple times.
@babyfiretiger13 with corms I wouldn't let them sit too long in the water just enough to really get them moist. Than dump the water... Leave the lid on and they should be good till tomorrow.
@RJG awesome! This thing has been on a decline ever since I got it. I’m convinced it was overwatered by the nursery. I mean the thing was bleeding the first days I got it. And then one by one leaves would flop over. The roots weren’t taking in much water, I would water maybe every 8-9 days. I have soil, so I bury the corm halfway and keep it moist and humid pretty much?
@melodey yikes 😬 yes less water! Taking some out now! I know nothing about sphagnum moss…it kinda scares me lol
@babyfiretiger13 πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ it's a little intimidating at first! After watching countless videos on corm props Its been the most commonly used substrate for it. Just soak the moss really good and then squeeze out the excess water enough until it's "very damp" but not dripping.

Than water when it starts to get more on the dry side. Key is to keep it at that dampness.

Keeping it in the prop box helps tremendously.

But soil will work! Keep those bad boys in the prop box and they'll do their magic
Man, the more posts I see about the sill the more I know I will literally never buy a plant from them, no matter how good the price... I'm so sorry you're having to deal with this!
@melodey okay so I’m gonna try that! I’ll try to get more roots growing from the plants in water. I think the smaller one with one stem isn’t going to make it though! That’s the clump that smelled so bad and 4 leaves have died on that one. The other one still has all of its original leaves so I’m crossing my fingers!
@WickedValkyrie yea I haven’t had good luck with them. Although this plant LOOKED great when I got it, it was doomed from the start. I have purchased other plants from them too and have had to pretty much rehab and nurse them back to health. I mean it is rewarding but not so much when they are as expensive as they were!
Yeah and I've seen people receive entirely different plants from what they ordered as well... Hard pass. Lol If I want a rehab plant, I'll go to Lowe's and get one half off πŸ˜‚
@WickedValkyrie seriously! I actually just got a plant from Home Depot, a black raven zz and it was in much better condition than the sill plants by a home stretch!
My bestie used to work Home Depot customer service and would always bring me the return plants that "would've wound up in the garbage anyways" so I could save them for her. They were usually in pretty good shape, just typically over/under watered. Then one time she brought me a dracaena that had scale/mealy bugs and a fungal issue... I made her get rid of it and told her not to bring it to her place either cuz it would likely kill her porch jungle we had worked so hard on... πŸ˜… That was the last rescue she ever brought me. Lol
River Song here is actually the only one I kept (she got two of them) and I'm so proud of her! She's come so far... πŸ₯ΉπŸ₯²
@WickedValkyrie WOW! Yours looks so good! Mine has looked so bad I've taken it off Greg twice but green keeps coming back!
Sorry, Melissa. πŸ˜–

BUT you got some GREAT information from @melodey πŸ’š
@WickedValkyrie oh my! Thank you but no thank you!! You’ve done a great job at bringing that one back to great health πŸ‘ŒπŸΌπŸ€©
Looks like I may want to add a few more plants to my "repot" list 😬
@sarahsalith thanks! Yea we’ll see how this goes. It was just doomed from the start! It came soaking wet and had been just dropping leaves ever since late April when I got it. Lol the other day I walked by and a leaf literally flopped over so dramatically, I was like β€œπŸ™„ what a bit**.” I’m always up for a challenge though! I keep telling myself β€œit was free, it was free” so that’s keeping me in this I have nothing to lose feeling. I have to at least get something out of all of this!
@PlantMompy lol not fun! But it will be a great challenge that’s for sure!
I've been having pretty good luck with my plants from them, but some are obviously not quite right. I had a couple rubbers that still had netting on the roots, too. I was putting off pulling apart my huge snake and Arrowhead (you convinced me on the coffee a few weeks ago) but I should probably do everyone to be safe.
@sarahsalith I'm telling you the secret is neglect! Lmao I only water when the soil is completely dry and she's just growing away! (:
@PlantMompy it’s so annoying because I’d rather not disturb their roots. They have such pretty plants online but they are just not worth the hassle lately! On the plus side your snake might be okay, I got a free small one (laurentii) 6+ months ago when they had a promotion and I just separated the pups and no netting!
@babyfiretiger13 that stinks! I think I remember you posting it when you received the plant. That site is way tooooo expensive to not get healthy plants.
@AwesomePlants yea, it literally stinks! πŸ˜… that was only a month ago too! This thing was doomed from the very start πŸ™ƒ it will be okay though, everything always works out in the end! πŸ˜‰
@babyfiretiger13 Don't feel bad. We've all been there. I quite frequently sniff my roots...no one but my #GregGang would understand πŸ€ͺ .
@AwesomePlants yup! We go to extreme measures for our plant children πŸ˜…
@babyfiretiger13 wow that’s great info when I get one. That’s still on my wish list.
#RottenRootPorn is making me laugh too much
@KikiGoldblatt yup! Hopefully this won’t happen to yours πŸ™‚
@ABCD haha yup a root is a root no matter what! πŸ₯°
