Pot size Ponytail Palm
Hi guys,
First time here.
I need to change my ponytail palm's pot and I was wondering which diameter I should choose.
I need to change it cause I am seeing new roots that exit out the pot, currently it is a 5" squared pot (I think, like 15 cmx15cm)
Thank you all!! #PonytailPalm

@GladLilacmist89 Ponytail Palms don't need as large of a pot as you might think. Their roots are shallow and they prefer to be slightly root bound. Their growing season is just about over so it's going to slow down. I would wait until spring to go up in pot size like @Just1More said a 6 inch pot would do it. Your Pony is beautiful and I'd be afraid of going up in size now with its growth slowing down you would risk overwatering which would lead to root rot.
Thank you both, @princesspitstop and @Just1More
I think I'll follow both your advices, going for a 6" pot in spring
I was worried that the root might grow more during fall/winter time, but if it slow it's grow, during this period, I will wait
Also, I noticed that some of her leafs (on the corner) are brownish, do you think I should water it more, or is it for the root growth?

@GladLilacmist89 The brown on the leaves might be from chemicals in the water. If you aren't already, trying using either distilled water or rainwater if possible. This should clear them up.
@princesspitstop thank you!! I will try and I'll come back to you with some news in the future π«Ά
@GladLilacmist89 Ponytail Palms store water in their caudex which is their trunk. So make sure the soil is completely dry before you water it to make sure that the plant isn't getting too much.
@GladLilacmist89 Wonderful ππ I can't wait! π
@GladLilacmist89 Hi and welcome! Iβd go up to an 8 inch pot. Rule of thumb is one size bigger than the rootball but that plant looks too big for a 6 inch pot so Iβd go a little larger.
@GladLilacmist89 I have experience with Ponytail Palms but wanted to double check to make sure what I was telling you was correct. This is what Google says about them. π Ponytail palms have a shallow, fibrous root system that is well-suited to their water-storing bulbous base. Because of this, they prefer shallow pots that are only slightly larger than the root ball to prevent the soil from staying too wet. Choosing a pot with good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot, as the plant can store water and doesn't need a lot of it.
