It's hard to tell because even a healthy VFT has black roots; they definitely aren't the healthiest they could be, but I don't think it's on death's door. You must get him a container of distilled or rainwater to set the pot in. VFTs are bog plants whose roots constantly need to be in contact with water. It also needs plenty of sunlight
