what is causing this yellowish mold? not my first plant to have gotten mold in the soil 🥲

Mold isn't bad for plants itself. It can suggest that the soil is holding on to moisture for a while.

If you want to knock it put you can pour hydrogen peroxide on it.
@kmaytender @RJG is right. Hydrogen peroxide is great for stuff like that.
This mold in particular, slime mold aka “dog vomit” (🥴🤢) is actually good for your plants as it breaks down decaying matter and bacteria! I know it’s scary when you see it, and kinda ugly though 😕 I say this to say don’t worry! 🙂
