Cactus propagation

I had a fall last night, my beautiful African milk bush fell from my porch rail onto the ground and AMAZINGLY ONLY lost two limbs, & the pot didn’t break! I was still sad but I know it could’ve been far worse so I won’t complain. 😫 I want to try to propagate the ones that broke off but im not sure the best way to do it. Should I stick them in some dry dirt and let them do their thing ? Do I let them callous first? Can I even prop these ? I’ve never propped a cactus before so I have questions lol.. πŸ˜… please help a gal out πŸ™πŸ» #PropagationStation #Propagation #Cactus #CactusClique #Cacti #AfricanMilkBush #PropDontShop #helpneeded #GreggersSupportingGreggers #GregGang #Question #Succulents #SucculentSquad #SucculentLove #PlantAddict

@TidyTigerpear Hi Kaitlyn! I have two huge Milk plants! I always just stick them in the dirt as soon as they are cut, or broke on your case☺️. No need to let them callous over unless u just want to. Just remember to pile the soil up around the newly planted piece so it won’t go anywhere and give it a drink! That’s it! If you wanted to callous first, u still do it the same way just after they callous. I’ve never stuck one in a glass of water before, if you try that, please let me know how that turns out! I have some 3’ long pieces that I need to clip off as well and if the water works well, I might give that a try too! Good Luck!πŸͺ΄πŸŒΊ
@TidyTigerpear Nooo your beautiful African milk tree! 😭 That’s amazing that it only lost two limbs 😱 I once pruned mine and planted two limbs back into the pot to fill it out a bit more and they took beautifully. I did let them callus over for a day or two, but don’t know if you β€œhave to.” You probably already know this but just make sure you wear gloves or wash off any sap that gets on your skin immediately and don’t let your animals touch the sap either. 🐾 🌿
@DreamMachine I actually did not know the sap was toxic ! Thanks for the advice lol…
It’s okay mostly except it’s got a mean lean 😫 I’m kinda sad because it was looking so good it was one of my favorite plants, I’m hoping it will maybe straighten back up over time. It was laying on its side I’m assuming all night till early this morning.. I moved it to the ground or porch floor so we don’t have another incident πŸ™„ @Ponytailmom @DreamMachine
@TidyTigerpear yours is definitely a show stopper! I’d never seen one so green before and really β€œtree” shaped. Do you have a picture of what it looks like now? It was so healthy looking I’m sure it will make a valiant comeback!
I have tons of euphorbias and I have found the best way is to allow them to callous over a good amount of days and then pot them up…. The milk is toxic but I’ve been exposed to it a million times when propagating in a big greenhouse setting and I’ve always been fine just wash hands after you mess with your cuttings. Since these types of euphorbias are bad about rot at the bottom of the stem I am careful to have it callous over before I bury the end in any medium. They are super cool plants !
@DreamMachine I will take one later today! It doesn’t look too bad other then it’s kinda leaning a lot, which I’m not very happy about but hopefully over time it will straighten out on its own. I think it’s from where it was on its side over night before I knew it had fell.. considering all things it could’ve been a lot worse so I’m not too upset lol.
@Hoyaobsessed thank you! I actually potted them up yesterday in dry dirt and I haven’t watered them or anything, but I didn’t know they were bad about rot so thank you. Someone else said it didn’t matter if I let it callous or not but I’ve found with most propagation with succulents that it’s better to let them callous just to be safe.
I’m glad Nadia said that I was going to say the same thing. Don’t let the sap get on you or pets. But how are you after your fall? Are you okay? Plants can be replaced; you cannot. πŸ˜‰ Otherwise, look at the bright side: you now have two more African milk trees, lol.
@Idplantthat I didn’t fall the plant did lol, I’m OK. I was a little upset that the plant lost a couple limbs, but it could’ve been far worse.! And yes I’m happy that I can make new plants out of the situation!
@Idplantthat I can see why you thought I fell because the way I worded it, but it was just my pot that fell off the railing lol 🀣
@TidyTigerpear oh shoot! At least you are okay. - and didn’t get burned with the sap! That sap is no joke. πŸ˜‰ I’ve got two of these and I keep them where my animals and nieces and nephews can get it. lol that sucks it fell off the railing. I’ve done it so many times.. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ I’m extremely accident-prone though. 🀣 it will be fun though to see them grow and make new shoots! Oh, and I’ve done cacti/succulents in water I actually have one in water right now, he spent all summer, summering but didn’t grow.. while the other three took off! So I dig him up. - and sure enough he needed a little help. So I put him in rainwater with a little silica and he’s doing so much better! If that helps you at all. If I can help at all please don’t hesitate to reach out. πŸ˜‰ but it sounds like you got a good handle on this! Ps- what a pot to take a tumble like that and not break! πŸ˜…
@Idplantthat wow I actually just learned about the sap being toxic !!! But I had no idea that it could burn you!! That’s crazy. Good to know!!!
