ICU Rescue Questionβ
#Dracaena #notsohappyplants #rescueplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy
I just rescued this snake plant from an abandoned apartment today. No clue how long it has been there. The soil it was in was extremely dry. Like not a drop of moisture. Should I let it sit in water for a while before I put it in Succulent soil? I've already replanted and watered really well. Thanks y'all!

I have previously rehabbed ultra dry snake plants in a similar way - repot with a succulent soil, watered and left in a shady spot/somewhere with a bit of morning sun only, and watering only when dry. It took time (and patience on my part!) but eventually it grew new pups. I also gave it half strength fertiliser initially and worked up to full dose over a few months. Good luck! Iβm sure your repot and watering will bring it back to health :)
@PiousGermanivy yours is like mine had folded over leaves. Mine wasnβt sun burned cause it was inside but boy was it limp lol
@TheConservator Got it! Yeah I immediately put it in a new pot and new soil and watered it in really good. I also trimmed the brown off of its leaves.So hopefully it will start getting better.
@PiousGermanivy I trimmed off the brown crusty parts of the leaves and it really doesn't look too bad. The rhizome is firm but the roots coming off of it were very dry and brittle. I didn't cut any roots. Hopefully it will come back and start getting healthy. I also had a snake plant that had a leaf like yours that folded over. To prop it up I put a rubber band around the whole plant to make the leaves stand up straight. It really helped and now doesn't need the rubber band at all.
@princesspitstop yes hopefully!π€ I recommend using some rooting hormone if you have it
@PiousGermanivy unfortunately I don't. βΉοΈ
@WelsomeRhodotus So there is no reason to soak it in water to get it hydrated?
@princesspitstop I would say no need to do peace lily style soaks, just normal watering. If youβve repotted, your nice new soil should be providing adequate moisture until the next watering.
@TheConservator yes mine was in a shop window I found it outside by a garbage and asked the shop owner about it I had to cut a bunch of the folded over ones that had dry spots at the fold but am trying to see if the ones that were not dry at the fold heal and try to propagate the parts I cut off. I split my plant into 2 pots to try different locations and pot typesπ€·ββοΈ
No. This is a succulent they hate wet feet. The roots will suffocate. Normally I would say propogate a stem cutting to hedge your bets. But this plant doesnβt have much to give. These are very resilient plants. Give it suitable substrate, bright indirect light and water it until the water comes out the bottom. As this is a dracaena best practice is to not use perlite. You can use 2 parts coarse sand and 1 part orchid bark and throw in some compost for nutrition.
@princesspitstop I do believe soaking the plant in water defeats the purpose, these plants store water in their leaves. Soaking might just contribute to root rot if the soil doesnβt drain well!
@TexanExpat Hi John, Good I've already done as suggested. Yes, I noticed the new growth and was very surprised to say the least. Maybe it wasn't left alone for as long as I thought. The other plants that were in there were potpourri π or are now potpourri! Hopefully I got to him in time.
@Ms.Persnickety @WelsomeRhodotus @TheConservator @TexanExpat @PiousGermanivy Thanks for all of the great suggestions! I'll keep you guys updated on its progress. π€π
@princesspitstop you want some plants ? I came over winter all of mine I have many kinds I just donβt know what Iβll have room for. Snake plants usually end up dying after a few years of insufficient light because people think they are low light plantsβthey just take forever to die lol
@princesspitstop best of luck with your new plant baby!
@TexanExpat Yes I've heard that! It never made much sense to me considering where their natural habitat is. Dry and Hot! Because of this crazy weather I've been putting them out and bringing them in. Letting them get as much natural sunlight as possible. Yes sir absolutely to the plants! You don't have to ask me twice. Perfect timing too tomorrow is my birthday! I'll give you my email address and we can exchange numbers there. ππ Heidilummus1210@gmail.com
