When you say the figs are rotting, what are you seeing? These figs would be dark purple when ripe if it's truly a Chicago Hardy, so they may look like they're going bad if you don't know what to expect.

Have you tried to take a look at the roots?
It could already be root bound since these have fast growing, sprawling (up to twenty feet) roots.
@UltraKoreanfir they're not purple, they have been really squishy and they have this black substance on them
