Carnivorous Plant Terrarium
Hey y'all! I know this has been discussed here a lot, but quite honestly, I don't want to scroll back ð
Anyways, I was out shopping for a new bowl for my aquatic utricularia (utricularia inflata) when I came across this beautiful, perfect glass cookie jar! I think it'd be absolutely perfect for a terrarium of some sort. Of course, I want to do a carnivorous plant terrarium.
Here's the question(s),
1. Would this even work?
2. What plants do you think would work best? I want to have either pings or tropical sundews. If possible, maybe some terrestrial utricularia as well. Any specific species recommendations?
3. How do you all have yours set up? (Photos would be awesome for inspo!)
For the species recommendations:
The room is ~80°F during the day & ~70°F at night. I'll probably add some more growlights to make it brighter since the 1 bar lights by themselves don't do much.

I love those cookie jars, I have a bunch of them and they are perfect terrariums!
Here is one of my setups.
I always use 50/50 perlite/peat moss with live sphagnum on top. That way when the top of the sphagnum starts to look dehydrated I know when to water.
Anything will be fine in there it's up to ypu what you like the most! Pings don't like as much water so if you get a ping be sure not to overwater.

@SuperbRaspfern thanks for the info! One thing im worried about is mold -- do you keep the lids on 24/7? Or does it just not mold with how you have it setup?
@Merranda I keep them slightly cracked they stay nicer that way. I like to be able to see my plants and enjoy them. If not cracked the get condensation, which is fine. But, then you can't see what is inside as well.
Hi @SuperbRaspfern!
I again come to ask some advice seeing @Merranda post.
I have a Nepenthes in an enclosure, but it became so big I am thinking of buying a big cookie jar to create a terrarium...the thing is....I don't know if it could be best to just acclimate it and let it out or how do you trim yours to keep them in size for your terrariums?
It's thriving in the enclosure, it even has a lil baby with 2 lil jars ð

You could acclimate her you live in an area with VERY high humidity so they will be fine. Although air conditioning indoors can dry out the air so if you do keep a close eye on them if they start to look dryed out the consider adding a humidifier. And make sure the soil stays very moist, they don't do well going dry so you will have to water much more often.
I don't trim mine but I also keep them in larger reptile terrariums. If you want to keep them covered then you could get one of those for them I'll share a link or even an old fish tank you find on sale works great!

Cookie jar cheaper option I also use Anchor Hocking glass cookie jars from WalMart. They are inexpensive and in my opinion perfect. I had to erase the links because Greg won't allow me to share Walmart links.
Or 2 gallon out of stock right now but I'm sure it's available somewhere. But it's a great size I also have a couple of these
If you choose to do outside of the terrarium go slowly to allow them to adapt. Don't rush it because they are so happy right now you wouldn't want to shock them.
Day 1&2 2 hours uncovered then back in
Day 3 & 4 4 hours
Just add 2 hours a day. That should allow for a smooth transition.

@SuperbRaspfern thank you so much for sharing your knowledge ððŧââïļ
I don't live in a high humidity area so I think it will be better to not stress my plant and better buy a bigger enclosure.
Thanks for the links and pics :3!
Have a wonderful day ððŋ

@HunkyStrapwort Sounds good, my area is super dry as well so I have many terrariums for my plants that demand high humidity! ðĐ·
@Merranda by the way, if you don't want mold in your terrarium you can add a little bit of springtails and/or isopods, they will keep the terrarium clean and make a good snack for carnivorous plants
