Just got myself a Psychotria

They are about 5 inches big and look to be in good shape. Any recommendations for soil composition or some brands that I can use to repot? Can I leave outside; if so when should I give it the most light? A bit much to ask but Iโ€™m new.

Hi Adam ๐Ÿ‘‹ welcome to Greg! And this weird and wonderful planty world! ๐Ÿ’š You'll find the community on here great! We're a helpful, friendly bunch who all love plants so there's none of the nonesense that you get on the rest of the internet lol ๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿคฃ pro tip for asking questions, it's always a good idea to add hashtags to your questions ๐Ÿ˜Ž hashtags are groups and it's the best way to get the attention of the people with the most knowledge! So, for instance, I would normally say add your plant tag #psychotria (though in this case it's the first time it's been used so there isn't a group yet! ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜†) and then general tags like #greggang #plantsmakepeoplehappy #help #newplants etc if you start typing Greg will prompt you with the biggest groups first ๐Ÿฅฐ

Ok... I'll do my best here! Lol it's basically part of the coffee family (which I didn't know before) but soil wise I'd go for equal parts coir, horticultural sand and vermiculite or zeolite (zeolite is like vermiculite 2.0! Lol ๐Ÿ˜‚) you want it free draining but still able to retain nutrients (which is what the vermiculite does). I'm not sure where you are in the world so suggesting brand is difficult! Lol ๐Ÿ˜‚ we're very international! We have a large American contingent (Greg is a US app originally), I'm from the UK, we have Aussies and Germans and Indians and... Gosh, people from all over!

She'll need lots of light, so if you live somewhere warm I think she should be fine outside, you'll just need to find the right spot for her (Greg's usually good at helping with that) and she'll want her soil to dry out between waterings. Most plants like to dry at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the pot depth before being watered again (honestly, sticking your finger in the soil is STILL the best way to know! Lmao ๐Ÿ˜‚) but they like a nice regular schedule... If Greg tells you to water and the soil is still damp as far down as you can stick your finger, hit the snooze button (or if the app doesn't say it's time yet but you can see she's gone floppy overnight and the soil is dry, hit water!). Greg will learn your particular plants routine within a few weeks ๐Ÿฅฐ

She'll handle full sun, but it's best to introduce her to it gradually. Start with a position where she gets direct light in the morning or evening, but shade during the height of the sun at midday, and then each week move her closer to the brightest spot ๐Ÿคž you should be good!

I hope that all helps lol Greg does have a guide of course, which you can find here

Best of luck! Enjoy your plant and the app ๐Ÿ’š and remember you can always ask us! Xxx
