Potting stem "clipping" tips needed for found Mexican Fir...
Right after I said, "No more plants for now!" I came across this beautiful Echeveria at a Memorial Day BBQ.
The very dried out stem broke right off from the plant with no pressure at all when I was inspecting (a.k.a petting πΏβΊοΈ) the leaves. The host was very kind and said I could have the stem.
The mother plant was planted in the ground but looked like it hadn't even cared for very attentively.
Although she was blooming she was overcrowded in her little patch of dirt and I noticed so many spider webs, shriveled leaves, and sunburns on the various plants in the same back yard. Don't even get me started on the state of the Aloe plant I saw π€―π³π β #plantrescue time!
I'm wondering if I should leave the full root when I pot her or cut off the dried bottom 1/3 or so β Notice the Ariel roots right at the top in the pictures.
The issue is I'm leaving for vacation in 2 days and don't have time to get a new pot for her so all I have for her new home in is a very wide shallow pot (glazed clay with drainage hole) about 8 inches wide and 3 inches at the deepest point, so I'm thinking she may want less root /stem to grow into the new environment. π€ π€·π½ββοΈ Thoughts?
I'm also wondering if she has scale or something else? π₯ π€πΌ (see picture) I will keep her isolated in the new pot but need to treat her asap if it's needed before I go out of town. #pestcontrol #echeveria #succulentsquad #succulentlove #newplant

What a COOL LOOKING plant!
If I were you, I'd just put it on the soil and leaf it alone. A wide, shallow pot will be perfect! Put it in super-fast draining soil and walk away.
As long as you aren't going on vacation for a month, it should be okay.
One of my favorite plants hit the ground in April. This is what it looks like now.
I have it sitting outside with southern sun. I water it about once every 10 days, or so. By just laying the stems across the soil, I have lots of new growthοΏΌοΏΌοΏΌοΏΌ!

She's so pretty π
I'll definitely let some more experienced succulent growers chime in, but if I were in your position I'd cut the stem, let her callous until right before you go on vaca and put her in her pot then. I'd also take off the leaves that would sit on the soil and put them around the extra space in your pot to prop. I just proped the top of one of my lanky succs like this about a month ago and she's happy and healthy with no issues!
I don't know about the disease or not.

Iβve been reading about SucculentsοΏΌ because I havenβt had good luck Love them this is beautiful Iβd think itβd root if laid in proper soil sand mix? And the leaves I think will root Like I said I been reading My experience in not good I need to take photos and get Help Your plant is gorgeous
@PlantMompy Thank you! β₯ She is so pretty! π₯°... I was thinking of trimming the root for a better fit in my shallow pot β especially since she's got arial roots at the base.
Good idea to trim off the bottom leaves as those are the ones that have the scale-like issues. I have 2 days before I leave for my flight. Could be enough time to callous over and I have some rooting hormone. Also I do have an experienced plant sitter staying at my place when I'm gone. ππ½ β₯ @sarahsalith @Sassylimey do you ladies have any pro tips? π

@roxyvivien your plan is perfect! I think they say like 24-48 hours to callous (I definitely went over that) so it's perfect timing! Plus, rooting hormone makes everything better.
Here's the one I did a little while ago. You can see I didn't take enough leaves and lost one on the bottom, but that's all!

Thank you for the tag π I'm in agreement with @sarahsalith
Thanks @sarahsalithand @Sassylimey β₯ I will plant her tonight and water tomorrow cause it's definitely been a while since we had rain outside where she was living and she's very dry! Can't wait to come back from vacation and see what I find! πππΏ

P. S. I have Succulent soil and Perlite and do a 2:1 ratio and that's been working great for my succulents

Question @sarahsalith is that a ghost plant? I have those and they propigate like crazy! I can't count how many plants I've given away that came from leaves or a random leafless stem. π
@roxyvivien @sarahsalith is spot on.
@KikiGoldblatt @sarahsalith @Sassylimey UPDATE Pic! Her new home on my balcony. She could probably go to more full sun on the deck when she's rooted. π For now she's on my gardening supplies bookshelf with the other big potted succulents that get too much sunburn in the summer without the awning. π I threw in some pink ice clippings for fun ππΏ the last Pic is my ridiculously sunny deck where I have to hack the shades part with a wooden tier and an umbrella - I stuck a kettlebell in the pit to keep the umbrella wind proof π [edited cause Greg uploaded my pics in a different order lol]
@roxyvivien that's PERFECT!! I love your Jade!! And your HUGE Schlumbergera truncata!!
Thank you @sarahsalith π β₯ the jade and Thanksgiving cactus are rescues from my downstairs neighbor who sadly had to move to a nursing home. She didn't care for her plants for over a year as she had dementia π β They were on the brink of dying! I had to really up my succulent game to nurse them back to health. The Jade is 15 years old!
