A couple issues at once
hi there! my girl aubrey has been slowly developing some issues over the past few months and im looking for advice.
1. as you can see from the pictures, she does NOT have the right soil, and has been in it forever. which soil should i switch it out for?
2. she has uneven watering as shown by the wrinkling AND yellowing leaves. (in that first image i had to hold those up, they were drooping over the side) i water her by taking her out of the grey outer pot, set her in my shower, spray cold water in it until it goes through the soil, then wait for it to stop dripping out of the bottom, and put her back in her grey pot, and im doing this every three weeks now. (and during that, i give her some maintenance by removing the old paper-y shells that the stalks grew out of.) i dont know if im watering her wrong, like ive seen people put rocks in the bottom of their pots for some reason, but im having a hard time figuring it out
3. the third image shows where i cut the stalk after taking some yellowing leaves off, it's slowly become more shriveled and brown like that and im not sure how to remove it properly without harming the rest of the stalk.
4. she has miniscule little marks everywhere, like a healed wound on a leaf, a couple dark spots here and there on her stalks, etc. when should i be worried about them?

Hey there. Sounds like you have an unhappy plant. Just read your post and thought Iβd share what I do with my zz plants and I have quite a few - some of which are over 8+ years old. The thing Iβd avoid with mine is over watering. I never allow water to soak through the plant - ever. As ZZs will suffer rot very quickly. I honestly only water mine MAYBE once a month and whatever Greg (this app says to waterβ¦ I halve itβ¦ zz donβt like water and donβt need it often). So if Greg here says to water it 200ml based on the pot size. I will give it 100. So I think from what Iβve read that you do, I think you may be overwatering it- also judging by the yellowing of the leaves. Not sure if thatβs helpful at all but little and not often for zz and definitely not a soaking in the shower :). Fingers crossed you can dry out that baby and hopefully revive it! Iβve found when Iβve rescued zz from someone overwatering - that I had to cut the entire stalk off and pull out the bulb or else the rot would spread. Have a look at yours and see - if itβs a soft bulb, itβs bin time. :)
@MellowGray48 Hi! π I planted my ZZ in Succulent soil mix with perlite. Mine is a dwarf ZZ and since they like to dry out in-between watering I planted him in an orchid pot he seems to like it. I don't know the answers to your other questions but a succulent soil mix is perfect for them.
@JoyfulSalsa ahhh this is so helpful, thank you!!! where would i find how much water it recommendeds? (im new here lol)
I agree and think overwatering is the issue. Zzβs donβt need a lot of care and like to dry out in between waterings. I have mine potted in mostly succulent soil and some pearlite so it has good drainage. Iβd also look at the type of light it is receiving. They are not the type of plants that need bright direct light.
@BusyGinkotree ah got it! 95% of the time, she's in the location i took those pictures in, so that's the average amount of light she gets in the late morning
βIndirect sunlight is light that reaches a plant after being filtered or reflected, rather than directly hitting it.β Depending on what direction your plant is facing (NSEW), you may want to move it a few away from the window or use something such as sheer curtain to filter out some of the light, especially if itβs south facing. Mine is in a north facing window and itβs doing well there. But I think the big issue is overwatering. Def repot (again I suggest succent mix adding pearlite is up to you). Check the roots and remove and dead ones as well as any squishy bulbs. I hope that does the trick for you!
@JoyfulSalsa she should be watered today, im not finding where it's telling me how much to water her, do you know where it is?
@BusyGinkotree totally agree after losing 2 bc the seller overwatered them to the point of no return and I couldn't bring them back. One was a Raven Zz and I was so sad. I got replacements, they didn't drown and with the same soil blend you mentioned, I pretty much ignore them π and they're giving me new leaves π±β¨οΈπ
