Dying slowly...

I don't know why I keep trying with these "string of" plants. I'm not sure why it's dying like this. I watered her a while ago, and have left her alone. She is in an east-facing window. I just don't understand. Anything I can do? Or just to the trash with her? Thank you. #succulentsquad #stringofpearls #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantaddict

@wolfwoman good news! She is saveable. So these guys have shallow root systems. If their pot is too big you’ll accidentally overwater them. That might be the case here since part of her has died. They need a succulent soil that is 50/50 perlite and soil. I would down size the pot. Check the base of each string to see if the vine is good, if not, clip it and strip away some of the pearls and stick it into the moist soil. Keep the soil moist for about 2 weeks to develop new roots.

Another key factor is bottom watering. The little pearls can get water stuck in them when top watering and then they rot. So be aware of that. You can propagate what’s left if you want, and have it grow into a fuller plant.
I wish I could help. It is heartbreaking to see her in this state. This is one of the plants I say no to. I gift it. However, I never thought we would have a sustainable relationship. Hence, I admire them from afar. All the best!
Well @wolfwoman, I don't have experience with string of things in particular but, I do with succulents and the first thing I see is regular dirt on your card, and that could be a contributing factor. They need gritty/chunky fast draining succulent soil. Also, if you can, move it to a south facing window. As much light as you can. Hope this helps, good luck.
I’m so sorry she looks like this! Speaking from my own experience they need a lot of light. Mine is directly under a grow light on the highest light setting. I would replant all the salvageable bits with succulent/cactus mix. A decent amount still looks like it can be saved!
@TheOddAsity, thank you. I have a shallow pot that I can put some better mix in. I'll cut away why is salvageable and put them in the hat pot. Appreciate the input. I have some hope now at least! @FairyFly and @Jessa-Dawn, thanks so much for your tips as well!
@TheOddAsity, I took all the healthy pearl stems and placed them in different pots. The soil they were in had become pretty hydrophobic, so it wasn't absorbing water. Hopefully these will root soon. Thanks again!
@wolfwoman oh yay! From the one picture above it didn’t look like there was that many left! I hope it all works out.
@TheOddAsity, yeah, she's gone pretty bald up top, but the tendrils that were draping were pretty abundant. Crossing my fingers that they'll root up.
@wolfwoman I have a VSOP and I don’t know what happened. One side of the pot, the tendrils were fine but the base of those vines had pinched off. So I am also going through this right now.
SAME with strings of things. I’m on my third pearls and my third turtles, which is dying now. Bananas have struggled. Only my string of rubies is thriving β€” it’s got thicker vines and is by the window rather than under a grow light like the others.
@TheOddAsity, I think I had a VSOP forever ago. And it died forever ago, lol. I know I wasn't providing enough light up top, so that's why she went bald. But nothing I did changed anything. I'm only going to bottom water from now on. Sometimes, I know they're in too much soil. The stores have them in thick, slow-draining soil, too.
@captainstardust, this is my 4th SOP...I think? My string of turtles is the only one I've had good luck with, which is to say, I've only lost maybe 2 of them, lol. This is my current one. They're easier to take care of, imo. I think that's because they're technically peperomias, I hear.
@wolfwoman I love your turtles!! I got the tiniest little one. Hoping I can get a vine long enough to propagate. They are peperomias! Mine has those classic peperomia flowers. I put it in a bobble head pot πŸ˜‚

I hope your pearls recover!! They’re so pretty
@wolfwoman When I bottom water, and I think the soil may have become hydrophobic, I leave the plants sitting in the water for a couple of hours or even overnight.
