Sad Marley Evergreen
#Aglaonema I took this guy in from a coworker who possibly overwatered and over fertilized. I held off on watering it for a bit but Iβm looking for tips on best soil and best location for sunlight. Should I bring home and stick in bathroom for humidity?
1ft to light, indirect
4β pot with drainage
Last watered 4 weeks ago
Is the soil wet at all? Because from the picture it looks bone dry. So dry, that the soil is pulling away from the sides of the pot. I would get the cars out of there, although cute, and give it a really good soak. Put it in a bigger container of water and let it sit there for at least 20 minutes, because the soil is probably hydrophobic right now. If you were to pour over water from the top Iβm guessing it would run straight out the bottom.
The soil is looking pretty rough. Its profile mentions it has no drainage. I get a container mix and add just a bit of stuff like orchid bark or perlite because itβs cheaper than mixing potting soil, perlite, orchid bark, and other fancy things to create a really nice soil mix. I think Aglaonemas like water more frequently, so a chunky soil mix (like what I suggested above) and a pot with drainage would help. Iβm not sure how much humidity would help, Iβd recommend researching your new plant a bit. Best of luck!
@DreamMachine right now it has peat moss soil in it because I read that was better for them. Should I change out the soil or try your recommendation first?
@SageRedsky29 ooh yeah I would definitely change that soil first, you can check on the roots while you do that and make sure thereβs no rot, and then give it a good drink, if it needs it. While peat moss can be a good soil *component,* just by itself is too heavyβit holds on to moisture for far too long, and the roots canβt breath. Iβd definitely recommend what @GrowMyPretties said for soil. Aglaonemaβs live on the forest floor, so their potting mix needs to have chunky bits to make it well draining.
