Browning

I just adopted this old cactus, a grandpa really ;) the brown parts is only on the bottom and is hard to the touch - anyone similar experience? What can I do better? - I have already repotted it into a deeper pot, with succulent soil

The brown part is the cactus corking, an everyday phenomenon as cacti age; the bottom portion hardens off to support the cactus. Since your cactus is a grandpa, this checks out. The only thing I would say is not to water your cactus too frequently if you have been since overwatering is a common killer of cacti; they rarely need water and can go months without it.
