@LovelySquash if you just got it yes just to make sure there is no gnats. I got mine from the #GregPlantShop and no problems.
I got mine from Costa Farms and it arrived with a bit of fertilizer or something blue-green dried on the leaves and looked a bit dusty too. I used a mixture of water, neem oil, dish soap, and rubbing alcohol to spray the leaves down and wipe them. Now the leaves are super shiny and clean. The mixture not only deters bugs, but helps to allow the leaves to photosynthesize easier, and a bonus the plant LOOKS better!

Now that they’ve been deep cleaned I use the We the Wild neem oil spray for upkeep! It smells a lot better than the mixture I use to deep cleaned the leaves with lol
Thanks Daniel.
Thanks Natalie!!!!! Big help.
(I misread this as a pesticide question β€” I wrote another comment on why just oiling your leaves is bad) No, it stinks and most of the neem oil on the market has actually had the pesticide component removed during processing; a lot of people also saturate their plants’ leaves with it and end up clogging the stomata so the plant can’t breathe, making it more vulnerable. I’ve been using something called Mighty Mint Plant Protection for the past year, and I only use it when there is a problem to solve (I had 2 plants come with a mealy bug infestation, and I’ve had a few grow mold on their soil at various times… when I spray, I mostly hit the top of the soil β€” to kill mold or any bugs living in or crawling up from the soil β€” but with the mealy bug problem I was also doing a light spritz on the leaves every few days and checking them 2x a day to kill mealy bugs)
Re: just making leaves healthy, DO NOT PUT STUFF ON THE LEAVES. Your plant has something called stomata in its leaves that are basically how it breathes and gets rid of excess water. If you muck that up by putting oils and other stuff on it, you are harming your plant. A healthy plant will have healthy leaves. Oiling your plant’s leaves to make them shiny is like if you put house paint on your face to even out your skin tone and never washed it off.
Thanks Aly. They less I have to buy on care the more plants I can purchase!
