Do bandaids and βcastsβ work on plants??.
Ok, so I did something REALLY dumb this evening that caused the bracket hold an EXTREMELY heavy hanging basket to fail and so the EXTREMELY heavy baskets fell on top of 5/6 of my ficus plants which fell into my grow light that fell over into my Calathea patchβ¦it was like one giant devastation domino and I couldnβt even yell at anyone bc Iβm the one who caused it!!!
AMAZINGLY, with everything that happened, only 2 plants had any significant damage.
Ok so two of my ficus plants had their heads snapped over by the weight of the basket falling from above. Both of them snapped over but did NOT break off completelyβ¦
I used plant tape to take the heads back to the stocks and then I cut a straw into 4 pieces and cut each piece up the middle and put two pieces around βband-aidβ like a little cast, butβ¦how bad is it when something like this happens and how bad is it when it happens specifically to a ficus?
Hereβs pics of the bandaids and castsβ¦Iβve never had this happen to one of my plants beforeβ¦itβs not like a death sentence, right?

@PioneerRutabaga OMG , that must have been horrible. Watching it all happen and not being able to stop it. I envisioned it. But you seemed to have reacted quickly and appropriately. If the top of a Ficus plant stem breaks halfway but is still semi-attached, the plant may have a chance of survival if the break is treated quickly and effectively. While the severed part may die in some cases due to the interruption of its vascular system, reattachment or supportive care can sometimes allow it to survive. I found this website with further details https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/garden-how-to/propagation/grafting/reattaching-broken-stems.htm. Hope this helps π€and good luck!!
Sounds like you took care of them right away so they probably have a chance. One time I got plants through the mail and one plant had a bent stem, not completely broken off. It's a small plant but came with a stick already in the soil that it was tied to - I used the velcro tape and little claw-like clip it came with to hold it up straight against the stick and it eventually healed itself. I was prepared to prop it though! Maybe look into ficus propagation in case the tops don't reconnect to the main plant. Best of luck π€πͺ΄π
@PioneerRutabaga what an innovative and smart way to try and save the plant. I once broke the base of a blushing Philo I bought on clearance. It was in rough shape already but when I went to put in new soil. I partially broke the stem where the new growth was coming out. I actually used scotch tape to hold it back together and it healed!!! It took several months but it worked. I removed the tape once the break had grown back together.
