Well, @Kiwi9270 it depends on the cause really. Can I ask how long ago you adopted him and your general care you give? I noticed the card says "no drainage" which, good drainage is important.

@FairyFly i adopted him on the 22nd / today and they broke because the person at Home Depot was wearing gloves and crushed the spines a little

It should be okay @CalmViolet38. Just needs time to heal. Spines won't grow back unfortunately. They offer some sun protection but they're more for predator protection really.
