To repot or to not repot?

This guy desperately needs a repot but based on my research, it’s not an ideal time of year to repot so I’m wondering if I should wait? #TradescantiaNanouk

4” pot without drainage

@plantina I find that the seasons aren’t that big of deal for indoor plants in ambient temperatures. The pot size though doesn’t look too big to me. Does it have drainage. If so, I’d suggest trimming down the two long ends and propagating them rather than repotting. Tradescantias get leggy by nature (because they’re made to crawl along the ground) and do well when chopped and propped. Here’s my Nanouk who I pretty recently trimmed back. The more often you trim them, the more compact they get πŸ’œ
Hi Tina! @plantina I agree with @debbiedo in that, that plant does not need a repot. I just had to repot my nanouk because it had so many roots that it was getting bone dry every 4 days after I watered it. Your root ball will determine your pot size. If you imagine your root ball as a three dimensional sphere, they only need, on average, between 1/2”-2” of extra soil all around the root ball. (Except much larger plants will need much more room, respectively.) For a tradescantia, because they’re usually such speedy growers, I like to give them 1-2” of extra space.

If I were to guess what cutie Nanouk needs, on looks alone, I would say it needs more light and either more water or perhaps just a better watering rythym. How often and how much do you water? What kind of light is it in? What does your soil feel like right now? Those brown edges usually mean youve let it dry out for too long. The leggyness can mean it is stretching for more light, and this is quite common with tradescantias. Your pot might actually be a bit too big, at the moment, for yours, but I suspect it could become just right, given enough light and water. (And does it have a drainage hole?)
