How to start a compost? And what do I need (first timer)

#compost #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantaddict
I bought a compost tumbler from Aldi last year and I add vegetable scraps, leaves, pine straw and occasionally soil to it. Be sure to rotate it often. When you open it you should feel hear coming out of it. Needs to be in a sunny spot. I use it for my vegetable garden.
@greenvy does the container need to be open? Also, do I have to grind the scraps into powder / little scraps or do I just put it in?
@Sabel no it’s doesn’t have to the open. Mine has a little door on it. It’s raining now but I’ll go out later and take a take a pic. No need to grind the scraps just chop them in pieces. I leave a bowl on my counter while cooking and add them when I go then go out and add them to the tumbler. Also coffee grounds and egg shells.
This is what it looks like! That’s the door to put the scraps in.
@greenvy Hi Hannah, so glad you posted a photo. I thought my small space would preclude me from having an outdoor tumbler composter but yours looks like the perfect size for me. However smaller means slower composting process, if I understand correctly. What's your experience so far re composting time and would you recommend the size/model you have? Thanks! 🤗🌸
@CorvidFan I bought it at Aldi. I just happen to see it there a few years ago. As far as how long it takes I honestly couldn’t tell you? I didn’t keep up with it but throughout the winter I put my scraps in and by planting time in the spring it was ready. So several months? I make sure the tumbler gets lots of sun to speed the process along too.
