How do I prune my ZZ plant? Thank you!
@OptimistOakfern you should t really need to prune it, but if you have a yellow leaf or whole stem, you can cut off the yellow leaf or cut off the whole stalk with some sharp clean scissors. You donβt want to cut off any more than you have to because they tend to be slow growers where your situate them and how much light they get. Mine tends to get a yellow stock if I water it too frequently. Lately Iβve been watering all my ZZ plants every two months. Itβs been about two months now, but they arenβt showing any signs of needing water so I might wait a little bit longer because the only time I have any problems with this plant is when I water it, so best to underwater than overwater.
Just cut unwanted stems at the base. At a diagonal but really zz plants don't need pruned. Be sure not to cut too much off. Ideally cute above a node at 45 degree angles but only if necessary or if you want to propagate.
I will point out just so you know she looks very overwatered. I see the Greg app says every 13 days but this is too often for her especially during winter.
This is because they are actually a succulent and hold water in their leaves. They also like very chunky well draining soil. You will want to add more aeration to keep her happy.
If the soil is too dense and hold water to long you will start to lose her leaves. Each stem that comes out of the soil is not actually a stem but rather a long leaf with more leaves attached. When she hold too much water in her leaves the cells will become damaged. She will start to yellow (which your is starting to do) , and eventually those leaves (stems) will drop.
Make sure he soil does not stay wet for long periods and make sure she is absolutely completely dry before watering. I let mine go around 6-8 weeks between watering.
