Calling all #farmerfam!
This'll be my 3rd yr starting some seeds indoors to grow fruits and veggies outdoors. Has anyone started planning their Spring Gardening?
My sister got me this insane seed catalog from Bakers Creek (https://www.rareseeds.com/) so I could branch out to some more fun hybrid crops.
Some fun ones I'll be trying this year are:
- The Toothache Plant, which claims to make your mouth numb
- The Chocolate Daisy, which claims to smell like hot chocolate
The seeds I placed last week have already started to sprout so I'll be using the hashtag #farmerfam to track my progress. If this yr is anything like last yr, it'll be a rollercoaster of pests, peppers, and my dog Archie!

Yeah I've been looking for a new apt but balconies and south-facing windows really mess with the pricing. I use these https://www.homedepot.com/p/CITY-PICKERS-24-5-in-x-20-5-in-Patio-Raised-Garden-Bed-Grow-Box-Kit-with-Watering-System-and-Casters-in-Terra-Cotta-2340D/202563845 so I can roll them in and out of the house.
@DapperPineapple Thus is funny because I have the same seed catalog! I am planning to order my marigolds and zinnias from there! Normally the ones I get at the nursery are beautiful, but theirs are absolutely gorgeous! Everything else, my vegs and annuals, I buy as seedlings. I saw the toothache plant, I will have to look for the chocolate daisy and see if I want to plant some. Fun! I will share all of my growing on Greg too. Iâm in zone 6. And you?
Baker Creek is the best! Pretty much exclusively order seeds from them. Live plants too! Iâve got five-year-old dwarf banana trees in my greenhouse (zone 9a) from them. Theyâve even made bananas! Iâve tried both the chocolate cosmos and the toothache plant, very interesting and worth it for fun. And the toothache plant really works! ïŋž Iâm definitely eyeing my excessively huge cache of seeds, including the new ones I bought this year. I think Iâll be sprouting things in my greenhouse in the next week or two. Happy gardening!ïŋž
@WarmKawakawa I canât start plants in my house. I tried one year and the tomatoes were so leggy and fragile that when I planted them, the next day we had a pounding rainstorm and they were all smashed into the ground! Turns out I donât have enough light in my house for raising seedlings. They get weak and leggy. So, I donât do that anymore. The flowers I grow seeds with, zinnias, cosmos and sometimes others, get sown directly into my garden, and most are planted as seedlings from my local nursery, Stockslagers in New Lebanon, Ohio.
@DapperPineapple I think they list everything their website, including the live plants and flowers! Rareseeds.com ð I got the green dwarf banana, along with two other dwarf types.
@DapperPineapple the package came with the clips. I assume because the lids donât snap on. I put them on the end boxes incase the dog or kids run past the shelf and bump it. Iâd rather have dirt in the box than all over my floor. Iâm also zone 6 too! Pittsburgh.
@AC73LoveCats Above for @KDkat3 @DapperPineapple I donât know if you are in Zone 6 or not, @SpikeKing19. I figured out when I made OhioGang that we donât just talk among ourselves, but when there is something of consequence we think would interest a particular group, we add the hashtag to our post or comment. Also you can join that (or any) group, when you go to that hashtag.

I LOVE Baker Creek and have always had great luck with their seeds! I am growing potted peppers, 5 different varieties right now, and the micro tomatoes, but have many more I will be starting soon
