An easy way to get them to dry faster is to add something chonky to the mix either perlite or bark are great and inexpensive. I aim for 40-60% in all of my houseplants.
During winter this it is common to have too much moisture in plants since they are growing less, they are also drinking less.
Also if you can afford to switch from plastic to clay pots that will help as well.
If you can do theses small changes it will help eliminate root rot in the future as well.

@SuperbRaspfern good morning Shannon, thank you. I have perlite in them. I have some ceramic pots will that work and just purchased Orchid Bark Mx?
@SuperbRaspfern ok Iβll mix the Orchid bark mix in the soil and switch to the ceramic pot. πͺ΄ great idea π‘ thank you ππ½
@grateful_68 Your very welcome! π Have a great day π
@SuperbRaspfern great advice. I have this issue to in the winter.
@grateful_68 Iβm going to try repotting some of mine too. Itβs like i have haphazardly left my plants in plastic or terra cotta with out thinking about it many times. All of a sudden this winter it looks like some plants will need to be switched!
@SuperbRaspfern you have a good day as well
Definitely not trying to step on toes here but I just wanted to mention that terracotta or concrete is the fastest pots to dry out.. clay will retain moisture & glazed or ceramic isnt as porous to release it. So just in case you still have the problem of soil staying moist, terracotta is a great plan B βΊοΈ
@Momof83ans I bottom water and thatβ was my dilemma. I couldnβt understand why they were retaining water π¦
@Artistic_Stoner terracotta? I have some small 5-7 in terracotta but they have not drainage just decorative. I have my Christmas cactus in terracotta but itβs a 10in pot.
@grateful_68 they should have drainage just to ensure airflow & a way for access water to run out.. Maybe with the chunkier mix you donβt have to use a terracotta, see how that works for you first!
@Artistic_Stoner thank you: thank makes perfect sense. I just donβt want gnats or any more root rot.
@grateful_68 I feel ya girl!! Fair share here of root rot π
but switching to terracotta with drainage, & chunkier soil they dry out the top inch of soil no later then 3 days now for me. Good luck & hope this issue resolves for you βΊοΈπ
I agree that terracotta does dry out sooner which is great for some plants but many especially any rainforest plants will hate terracotta it just dries out to fast for many species that thrive in moist humid environments so is you choose terracotta use caution! β οΈπJust want to sure people understand that all pots have a purpose for different plants. It is relative to where they are native too.
As a general rule
1. desert dwelling plants succulents and cacti terracotta
2. Rainforest or topicals use clay or ceramic

@SuperbRaspfern thank for the tip, what bothers me about the one I used it only has 1 drain holes. But it has a Christmas cactus plant
Christmas cactus and spring cactus are epiphytes they grow on trees in nature so you definitely do want your soil to dry out although for mine I use ceramic and they do great the trick for them since they grow on trees in nature in tropical locations is to use a very small pot only 1 inch bigger than the root system. You donβt want a whole bunch of extra soil. Mine actually hang way over the edges of my pots.
Donβt use terracotta for Christmas cactus it will dry out too quickly and then drop its buds and the beauty of them are the flowers. To encourage blooming you can also give is a spritz with Miracle Grow Orchid Misting Spray that will help encourage it to bloom since now is the time for it to do that.
Also, just a tip for everyone when getting multiple different pieces of advice that can be very confusing.
Take a minute and click on the plant page of the person that is giving it. If that person is growing the same or similar plant species great they have some experience. If not, well, just be careful because if certain species are not understood it can be detrimental information. And it could lead to the loss of your plant.
I have a lot of questions I see and I will not answer because I have no experience in that particular plant. πͺ΄ It does make a HUGE difference.
I am not trying to criticize anyone, so please donβt misunderstand me here. I just want success for everyone, and I feel like this fact can be very helpful for people.

@SuperbRaspfern should I put the Christmas Cactus in a ceramic pot? Iβll get the miracle grow cause I just use water π§ to mist
@SuperbRaspfern thank you I appreciate you explaining it like that. ππ½ Iβll start taking everything in consideration
Sounds good and yes ceramic is good for these since they are tropical. They need time to absorb the water and nutrients.
Although the name of it is Christmas cactus it should never be treated like one they appreciate humidity too, so if you want to add a pebble tray below with some water to evaporate it will help just make sure your pot is not βinβ the water.
I always recommend not misting plants with water, it does not work to add humidity, it evaporates too quickly to be of any benefit and if any pools up on your plants leaves it can lead to fungal issues really quickly. Your plant will be fine honestly, with no added humidity.

@SuperbRaspfern oooh. I have orchid spray! π
@SuperbRaspfern thank you Shannon, youβve been very helpful. Itβs good to have things explained where I can understand them. Iβm new at a lot of different plants π± and learning about pots and moss and harmones lol. So Iβm grateful for your help honestly thank you ππ½ maybe others will learn from your experience as well π
