Help me build my first
#CarnivorousPlants #Terrarium!!! I got a big glass bowl so I can finally make a little bog. Definitely want spooky vibes. Iβm assuming I will just put #VenusFlyTrap so they can stay wet, and wonβt add my #Pinguicula since he likes to dry out a bit. Could I put a few baby #Sundew in? And I wonder if I should plan to stick them in the fridge for a while so that they can go dormantβ¦β¦.
@SuperStace yay thanks! I havenβt had one in a while. So you keep yours moist all the time, or do you let it dry out?
@RealSimpleMama the soil needs to be wet all the time, never let it dry, they can be a small amount of water in the bottom of the container
@RealSimpleMama I keep them moist all the time.
@RealSimpleMama I add more (water before it drys out, but always have water in the bottom)
A little late but.. That's awesome, I can't wait to see it when it's all finished!
Some species that I'd recommend growing in it alongside the vft would be..
Sundews:
- Drosera Binata . A type of forked leaved sundew. These do grow pretty quickly from experience
- Drosera Tracyi . A type of thread-leaved sundew, but it tends to be a bit shorter than the D. Filiformis ones. That being said, it can still grow up to 20in tall!
- Drosera Rotundifolia . A smaller sundew with cute little round leaves :)
- .. And of course many more temperate drosera! Those are just the ones that came to mind first.
Butterworts:
- Pinguicula Primuliflora . This came to my mind immediately! I have one, and they're adorable little guys. P. Primuliflora is a warm temperate ping, unlike the tropical varieties. Primuliflora grows in boggy conditions & has that dormancy period, which separates it from the tropical ones. As a bonus, their flowers are super cute!
- .. P. Primuliflora came to my mind first for pings, but there's a lot more warm temperate ones! I believe P. Primuliflora tends to be the most available though.
American Pitcher Plants
- Sarracenia Psitticina . The parrot pitcher plant is unlike the rest of the Sarracenia, it grows in a rosette and is more horizontal rather than vertical. This makes it ideal for a terrarium, as it won't reach for the skies like the rest ! Also, it's adorable ! I might be a bit biased as S. Psitticina is my favorite Sarracenia, but they're the best. Imo, a must-have, lol. Random fun fact: In the wild they can even grow submerged in water when it floods & catch tiny fish.
- Sarracenia Purpurea . The purple pitcher plant grows more vertically, but is the shortest (excluding S. Psitticina) of the Sarracenia. This also makes it pretty ideal for a terrarium.
- .. There are of course many many other Sarracenia, but I singled out these 2 since they're the shortest of them. The other ones tend to grow super tall (talking 2 feet when fully mature depending on species).
All of these have dormant periods, roughly the same soil (peat moss & perlite or long fibered sphagnum moss & perlite. Some people also use sand instead of perlite.), the same water requirements, and the same light requirements.
Hopefully this helped a little :)

@Merranda this is amazing! Thank you so much! And so what Iβm understanding isβ¦ you give me permission to get all of these plants, right?!?β¦β¦
@RealSimpleMama no problem!! And, of course !!! π
