Care tips for living stone plant?
Just got this new plant friend about two weeks ago and hoping for some care tips. I had one years ago but it didn't survive ๐ข so if you've successfully maintained your lithops, tell me your secrets!
I understand it doesn't need a lot of water, so it's just been sitting on my windowsill and I've been checking on it every few days. So far, the colour has yellowed a bit and it's beginning to shrivel (attached is a photo from today which you can compare to the plant card photo). Is the yellowing to be expected? (I understand that the mother leaves shrivel up as the new leaves growing inside use the water from the mother leaves).
Even with the south-facing window, I think it's possibly not getting enough light since spring has been cloudy and rainy so far. TIA #gregfam!

Thanks for the tag @FairyFly ! @ballondusoleil Sounds like you're off to a great start, putting it in a south facing window and showing restraint with regard to watering! ๐ It's true they need very VERY infrequent waterings โ since yours is in the process of splitting, you can actually hold off on watering all together until it's finished shedding its old leaves. During this process, the new leaves get most of the moisture and nutrients they need from the ever-shriveling set of old leaves. Giving it additional water right now could cause it to rot. If it starts looking especially wrinkly/puckered, you can very lightly water it as far from the plant as possible (basically right up against the inside of the pot). I use a small medicine dropper to water my split rock and lithops ๐
My very first split rock met a similar demise as yours. I didn't know not to water while they're splitting, and the next morning I awoke to a pile of pulverized goo where my split rock used to be lol ๐๐ชฆ

I've only had mine for a little while @ballondusoleil but, I know @stephonicle is pretty knowledgeable!!
@FairyFly thanks, Kourtney for tagging a knowledgeable plant friend! ๐
@stephonicle thanks for the tips, Steph! I really don't want to kill it so I really appreciate you taking the time to share. I have some empty essential oil bottles with droppers that I can repurpose for watering. I hope it'll eventually flower!
@stephonicle "Pulverized goo" is a perfect description. My neighbor had it, my friend had it, and it was always "I watered it right before I went out of town..."
Hey, i think it is a Lithops Lesilei ablinica if you are wanting to narrow it down.
@stephonicle is pretty much spot on, if they are not splitting you only need to water when the start to wrinkle and shirnk up.

@thenonnon thanks, Dave! Will definitely resist the urge to water as it does appear to be splitting. Good to know about the potting material - it seems ok so far but I guess time will tell...
@TheLonelyDaff thanks so much for identifying my stone plant, Taff! Will update it. ๐
@vvvelo I want to but resisting the urge to water it is a major test in patience! Instead, I moved it under a grow light since sunlight hasn't been very consistent and I'm just hoping for the best ๐ค
@ballondusoleil I have split rocks too. And I wasnโt watering them whole winter, and they were sitting under grow light. I like this usefully pic somebody posted on Greg app some time agoโฆ
@vvvelo thanks for sharing that, it's a very helpful reference.
Since moving it under a grow light, it's shown progress in splitting (instead of just wrinkling and yellowing) and I can see more of the new plant babies inside!
