Do I just pull of the flowers or cut the stem where they ...
Iβm giving this as a gift and I was told to cut off the flowers so it doesnβt die. But it looks like I can just pull off the flowers so do I cute the stem? Also any other tips are appreciated to plump it up and prevent it from going dormant! #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #PinkPlantsofGreg #pinkplants #help #PolkaDotPlant #plantsmakegreatgifts

So I was really worried because I found that info online too. However I was away on vacation and the dern thing flowered while I was gone. I loved the flowers and mine has bloomed three times and been fine after. I also see a lot of people post pics of theirs flowering and I always ask about that. So far I havenβt found a person in a forum that have died after the flowers. Talking with the nursery it seems light is key they love bright indirect light and that has kept mine pretty bushy.
@Nataliesplants everybody was saying it would go dormant and the flowers would make that go faster? Is that not true?
@Nataliesplants I have it on my sunroom closes to the sliding doors, I just moved it so I could get a good picture right now
@PlantyPlanter in my experience and from what Iβve seen no. However I read that too so I know exactly what you are referencing. The ones at the nursery were all blooming as well. The reference I read said to just pinch them off at the stem if you wanted to be safe.
@Nataliesplants ok! It wasnβt doing to well but since Iβve gotten it itβs spruced up. I was planning on giving it as a Christmas gift but it sounded like it wasnβt gonna make it so I was just gonna give it for Halloween. Do you think I could give it as a Christmas gift? I want it to be fuller so that would great if I could!
@Nataliesplants so it will go dormant for the winter even if it inside?
@Nataliesplants some of the leaves are brown and the tall stems arenβt very green, theyβre more dull
@PlantyPlanter mine did he just grew less. Iβm guessing due to the light since I donβt have him on a grow light.
@Nataliesplants can it self prop? I see baby ones in the pot
@Nataliesplants ok, thatβs a relief! If the sun room starts to get a noticeably less amounts of light then Iβll put him under one or something
@PlantyPlanter Itβs hard to tell because itβs so little but I donβt think itβs part of the plant. The babies I have had have been right next to it and 90% of them have spots already. It wouldnβt hurt to wait though and make sure they grow pretty quickly thankfully.
@Nataliesplants ok, so can I prop if some of the leaves or browning and the stem is a full color for the tall ones?
@PlantyPlanter I think if the stem is green then yes for sure because it will just make new leaves and be fine. Also, everything I read said if they flowered and started dying just prop them. My prop made babies in 2 weeks so it was quick.
@Nataliesplants should I prop it in dirt or water?
@PlantyPlanter so it was my first one and I didnβt really research it. I tried it in water for 2 weeks and it never sprouted roots so I just stuck it in soil and it thrived from there. Sorry I know thatβs a terrible answer but I was just experimenting
@Nataliesplants ok! Can you draw a line for where I should cut on the stems you think I should prop?
@Nataliesplants will the plant that I took the props from still grow? οΏΌ
@PlantyPlanter so I love a good trim and from what Iβve read you can take up to a third off of the stem and it will get bushier so thatβs what I tried to eyeball. I couldnβt draw the line super exact but I would cut 1/4βabove the branch junction. The bottom is fuller and very pretty so I would just chop off where the leaves start thinning out. Then I would probably cut that giant branch by 1/3 just for aesthetic purposes. He would loose a lot of the height but Iβm would look so much fuller and since the leaves thin out so much on most of the branches your not taking a ton of leaves. But if you want to do less I completely understand.
Yes I believe so - A leggy nerve plant is easy to fix. You just need to pinch or prune back the leggy stems to promote a bushier shape. If limbs start to grow out faster than the rest of the plant, just snip them off (above the leaf node). You can prune any time of year as needed. https://houseplanthelp.com/how-to-fix-leggy-nerve-plant/ this article is super helpful and gives a lot of info about pruning
@Nataliesplants the person Iβm giving it to likes big bushy leaves to the more bush the better! π
@Nataliesplants will it hurt/effect the plant if I keep it leggy?
@PlantyPlanter if you keep it leggy I think itβs more of an aesthetic preference. I think if you are taking really good care of him he will naturally fill out a bit. That same article also said you could pinch of the tips of the tops and it would encourage it to be fuller if you didnβt want to chop.
@PlantyPlanter if you are going to chop I would wait until he settles out and had time to adjust. He is probably fine in there if you want the person you are gifting the plant to to chose the pot. Does it have roots growing out of the bottom?
@PlantyPlanter likely a little. I have found that mine likes to be moist. Also though mine sheds his old leaves when he has a lot of new growth so that could be it too.
@PlantyPlanter ok in that case I would repot him.
@Nataliesplants so I shouldnβt wait even though I propped him?
@PlantyPlanter no I would wait heβll be fine for a few weeks heβs been like that for a while now. I would just reply before Christmas π
@Nataliesplants I should give him before Christmas?
Bury the bottom of the cutting in a pot filled with a peat-based soil mix. Use of a rooting hormone is not usually necessary, but if your conditions are less than ideal (too dry or too cool), rooting hormone might increase your chances of success.
Once you've potted up the cutting, keep the soil moist but not wet - got this from an article so yep just stick him in dirt which is also what worked for me and I used regular potting soil

@PlantyPlanter shoot it autocorrected me I meant repot before Christmas. I would probably give it 2-3 weeks then repot
@Nataliesplants ok!
@Nataliesplants I know the soil has fertilizer but I donβt know about peat
@PlantyPlanter I wouldnβt stress that just give him bright indirect light and keep him moist
@Nataliesplants how far down in the soil? Should I remove bottom leaves?
@Nataliesplants potted! Theyβre in the same pot as my Solomon seal which has pretty similar requirements.
@PlantyPlanter yay yay yay!! Youβll have to keep me updated with how the props and the big plants do!
@Nataliesplants will do! Thank you SO much for your help!
@PlantyPlanter anytime!!
