Wow! They are so green, I only got mine a couple weeks ago and they are not like this so any advice would be really appreciated :))
Girl is going wild. She’s got two spikes in progress!
@Kiersten Yesssss
@dylan1stokes For me orchids basically come down to the roots. Some people say to give them an ice cube or 2 once a week or so, which I don't recommend because among other things they are tropical plants and obvs ice is cold lol, but I think it's a decent way to gauge how much water they need. Personally, rather than giving them a little bit of water weekly or whatever I soak them for around 15 minutes every week and just watch out for the roots. You want them to be plump and green. The flowers will die eventually and then you can cut the stem back and it'll grow back eventually. As far as light goes they like quite a bit of light but not too direct - they can burn
@dylan1stokes (if some of that isn’t relevant it’s because that’s just my standard advice and I copy paste it hahaha) @RJG uses the same soaking method that I do!
@Megan @dylan1stokes you can see the soak in the picture!
My jewels finally bloomed!
We are ready to repot after the bloom cycle it’s in ends! Look at all those rooooooots!
@msbishop Yaaaassss

She’s so happpyyyπŸ₯Ί my dad gave me a little baby orchid but the roots were pretty dry so it’ll be a rehab project for me.
So cute idk why but so cute
So impressive!
@Nataleaf Whoa 😳
#RootPorn rescued over a year ago from a grocery store. She’s got three stems of buds currently! πŸ₯°
@Sasquatch Heck yes. love them roots!
@Megan @dylan1stokes I use the soaking method too! It’s really the best.
@RJG what’s your secret to keeping one alive?
I started using the ice but I wondered if it was too cold as well.
@KikisOasis the soaking method @Megan described. i just make sure the medium has almost dried out in between soaks. normally about 2ish weeks between soaks.
@Mgrits65 They look great Angie!
All of my orchids are ready for a repot. They all have active spikes and they’re crawling out of their pots πŸ˜‡
@egotopia this is true #RootPorn
@RJG Thanks!!!
Snagged my first orchid yesterday - I’m excited to learn more about them πŸ₯³
@RJG we’re such good influences πŸ₯°πŸ₯°
@Megan thank you, definitely no ice cubes and I tend to let all my plants soak when I water, once a month I will top water most to flush any crap out, but thank you for this :)
@RJG yeah this is what I’ll do when watering
@Megan @RJG hopping on the #OrchidOrg train πŸ₯°
Don't mind me, just following and taking notes for my one orchard I just got πŸ˜‚
Her name! 😹😹😹🧑🧑🧑
@Vforvendetti lol she got a bit sunburnt and dropped all her leaves on one side right before she was added to Greg πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

@Persephone so glad we could be of help Aimee!
I don't have any orchids YET, but I #buttchug most of my plants. It saves me many pests that like moist top soil and from over watering. I just wanted to chime in on this thread! πŸ˜‚. Lol
Here mine I soak once a week always on mondays I got this one cause my husband got me one for my birthday in aug and I didn’t know you can’t put in soil and I did and it killed it my husband said it want make it a month well he was wrong I have had for about 4 months and still has 3 blooms yay οΏΌ
@Curry πŸ₯°πŸ’πŸ»β€β™‚οΈπŸ€©
Wow I don’t have an orchid, but this thread is inspiring me to get one! 😲
@Greg they're not as intimidating as people make them out to be!
@Kiersten what do you do with the roots growing outside the pot, do you mist them or soak them in the water ?
@Kiersten and indeed it’s beautiful healthy one 😊
How long do you soak them for? I soak mine weekly for maybe about 5 minutes but their roots don’t look nearly as green or healthy. 😩
@Mgrits65 my grandmother worked in a nursery. She said the ice cube method is only for desert situations. Even then, it should not be used directly. She said use some moss in the media mix and soak it in a couple of cubes. Then place the mix in the pot. You can shock the orchid and send it to a dormant state.
We are still waiting on our chocolate orchid to bloom. It’s been a few years already. All we get are keikis. They’re plumping up nicely. Oncidium are my favorite. Looks like we are going to get spikes soon. Chocolatey floral scents coming soon!!!
@Roxanne anywhere 5-15 minutes (sometimes longer if i zone out) i also don't do it on a weekly basis just whenever the moss around the roots is almost but not completely dry.
@Sherrychoco thank you so much!!!
