Shriveled, malformed leaves
Any ideas on what might be up with my #DioscoreaElephantipes ? It’s young, started from seed this fall. It’s the most vigorous grower of the bunch, but its newest leaves are all small, wrinkled, and malformed. You can see the older leaves at its base at the right of the image. My first thought was a virus, but its pot-mate just to the left is so far unaffected. Overnight temps in this room don’t drop below 55°F, though the typical day-night range is 66°-60°. Pests don’t seem to be an issue, I’ve never seen any on the plant. Occasional fungus gnats in the room, though I’d be surprised if they have anything to do with it. Some soil mites that I can’t identify, but have been around enough and with enough other plants that I’ve considered them harmless. #PlantRX #sickplants #struggling #CaudexClub
I know they are pot mates, but I’m wondering if it’s a nutrient issue? @CordialWildyam as if the perfect leaf plant has more root space or something to that effect and malformed plant is overcompensating?
@Prentyce I’ll admit, I thought of nutrients and whether I should fertilize. I’ve repotted some of these that were older than this and I don’t remember the root systems being so vigorous that I’d fear competition yet. Adding a mild succulent fertilizer is probably a safe test
@CordialWildyam I’m totally invested! I’m a science nerd so this is absolutely captivates me!🤩✨ let me know how the fertilizer goes. I’m just wondering if it’s a genetic mutation in the plant??? Hmmmm I’ll do some research 😁🤓
@Prentyce hah, mutation was on my list too. But the prior two leaves are in good shape, with just some crinkling on the later one, so my guess is it’s environmental
