Possible root rot?

I can’t tell if somehing is wrong with my air plant base. I’ve had it for over a year and it’s been fine, but I just picked it up from its normal holder to soak it in water and part of the root was mushy and fell off. The other parts feel very strong still. I haven’t watered it yet, but thought it was important to add that I always dry them upside down after soaking them. I would appreciate any insight as this is the first time it has happened!

@kplovesplants Hi Kennedy! I have many air plants and I have had them for years, but honestly, I’ve never seen one do this before. If it were mine, I would soak it as normal and dry it upside down overnight. That way no water would be able to sit in that area at all. Then just see what happens. Do you fertilize them?
@Ponytailmom Hi Darah, thanks for responding! I will soak them and dry upside down overnight - hopefully it bounces back just fine. The rest of the plant seems to be ok which is why I am a little confused as to what happened. I do not fertilize them, is that something I should be doing?
