Crispy Leaves

So I read #Calathea are known to be finicky. Greg is telling me to water him but soil still feels moist at top (not wet). There a few crispy leaves and then one on top that just look a little weird. Should I water and any ideas on placement? #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #NewPlants #NewPlantParent #PlantTherapy #CalatheaCrew #CalatheaFreddie

Yup. That's what I do when I can remember. We've been getting alot of rain so the humidity has been great but steamy shower is always great. Hopefully some of the more experienced will hop on with more advice for both of us lol
Are you giving him distilled water or rain water? I know I made the mistake of giving mines tap water and it made the leaves brown... they don't like tap water...
@ManyLime Rain water, aquarium water, and when nothing else tap water that sits out several days with some plant food. Never straight tap… but also not distilled… I haven’t been watering it nearly as much as Greg suggests because the soil stays damp for a long time.
How's your humidity? Calatheas are so pretty but drive me insane lol. I killed my first one not knowing any better.. but I couldn't resist getting another.. she sits on the back porch and I just leave her the heck alone. I'm afraid to even look at her sideways or she will crisp up on me 😬
@ManyLime this is my first one. I don’t have high expectations but I’m hopeful! Lol. It could be lack of humidity too. But there are several other plants around. I’ll get some distilled water just for this little guy and turn the humidifier back on occasionally…
They love humidity. I set mines in the bathroom and let it steam up every few days because she's outside and not near a humidifier. Wishing us both luck 🀞🏽🀞🏽🀞🏽
@ManyLime great idea!!! I’ll take him in the bathroom which me while I shower!
They like showers. Sometimes I just warm shower mines leaves and don’t actually water the soil. It helped with this same issue. I have 6 different ones now and they all love it. Keeping them humid is key
My tip: don’t trust Greg’s watering advice!!!

I have an Easter Lily. Greg said to water it every 5ish days. I did that and nearly killed my poor flower!

Easter Lilys are not native to where I live so I have to water it daily. It’s doing much better now.

Anyways, my point is, do your own research. Greg can make mistakes! In my opinion, it’s not worth risking the plant πŸ˜† πŸͺ΄
@FiercelyFree yes all the Calathea species are finicky. The crispy leaves are from lack of humidity. You can make a makeshift pebble tray to boost the humidity some. But I mist my Rattlesnake plant daily as well as having a make shift pebble tray. Doing both has help her along quiet a bit.
All this. I mist daily and I don’t water until dry. Mine tends to not like direct light either. Lots of indirect light somehow.
Thanks for all the great advice!
