i’d say that’s a good step. removing the affected pieces is important. if it continues to decline or you root around and see the mold goes deeper than the top layer, then i would repot the whole thing in fresh soil. that would also be a perfect time to see what kinda root system you’ve got going on and remove any icky looking bits.

I would remove the moldy parts and try to propagate the top. It looks a little more like rot than mold.οΏΌ
