Does the grey feel like fabric? I wonder if it's something it was planted in before being placed in a larger pot.

My guess is it's something the grower used while growing the plant. I have seen netting on plants but it's usually much smaller.

If it's not affecting your plants heath, I'd leave it alone. But just know it might be a huge pain when you repot.
