Plant of the day - Astrophytum caput-medusae

Hi everyone, for today’s plant of the day, I wanted to showcase a unique and rare plant that deserves more attention. It has beautiful tubercles that protrude from the almost non-existent body, and it has a large, fat taproot. These adaptation have allowed it to survive the harsh environments in parts of Nuevo León Mexico. Although, it is highly adapated to life there; it is facing threats to its population through poaching and livestock trampling. I would love for everyone to share more information on this plant, or even share with us you’re own plant if the day! I will try to post one of these everyday, so please join the plant of the day hashtag if interested #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #HappyPlants #plantoftheday

Glad you're doing it! I don't have a current photo, but here's my Hoya retusa [grass] with some baby growth! I waited 3 months for this lol
Also, how much did Medusa cost you? Must've been a ton, given it's rarity [the only plants i can relate it to in terms of rarity is Cryptocoryne x timahensis and Corybas sp., maybe Rafflesia too]
@zhjkdc what's the email for?
@Araceae
…🎤*tap-tap* “Hello? Is this thing on?” 😆
Glad you’re doing it, too, Beau! I don’t really have anything rare myself to share, aside from maybe a creepy-ass looking spider orchid, but I don’t think it’s truly all that rare so for now I’m just gonna troll the posts and ask questions about any featured plants that catch my interest. 😘
How easy or hard are these to care for? I recently saw one for sale that I think is either in poor shape or a cutting but I'm very tempted to get it!
#plantoftheday @LucidAgapanthus A Medusa's Head Cactus is actually a type of succulent plant, specifically a member of the Euphorbia family, known as Euphorbia flanaganii. It's often called the "Medusa Head Plant" due to its characteristic appearance with long, tendril-like branches resembling the snakes in the mythical Medusa's head.
@Ms.Persnickety oh, no that’s a different plant, but they are both commonly called the medusas head cactus. Astrophytum caput-medusae is just much rarer in cultivation.
@Arace @HisLobster

I reported this person, robot, or....maybe it's legal but looks awfully suspicious to me. 🤔😳
@ballondusoleil I haven’t had it for long, but I would say as long as it is in an extremely gritty mix or all grit mix, it should be pretty easy to care for in my experience so far.
@Araceae this one was around $40 and has two buds!!I got it from vivid root on Etsy which also has their own website. Amie the owner is also so nice and willing to answer any questions!
@Araceae I also purchased a frithia pulchra from her and got free shipping because my order reached a certain price total. I’m looking at Pseudolithos next. Her website is Vividroot.net
