My plant has a hole (decaying spot) on one of its leaves....

20ft to light, indirect

4β pot with drainage

Last watered 4 weeks ago

Hello, @Plantguy2025: the damage is permanent... however you can slow down or stop decaying on the leaf.
As @Nahhhbroo13 mentioned, removing the affected leaf will be the best option as rot is a fungal and can spread not only to other leaves but to other plants that are nearby.
If you don't want to remove the leaf, you can use honey or cinnamon (both have antibacterial and antifungal properties). I'd stick to honey as it's going to be close to invisible once applied.
Dub honey with a cotton swab and cover the rotting edges with honey by following the line with the honey between the healthy and damaged rotting part.

@Plantguy2025 any signs of pests?? Ie any of those little specs on the plant moving?? Any webbing under the leaves, on the stems? Any fluffy bugs or marks under the leaves? Mmmm. Any more photos? Best of luck! I hope we can help however we can :)
@Plantguy2025 yea you are clean as a whistle π₯³π₯Ήπ± I think maybe it might be the start of scale based on these lil brown bumps! Could also be just some leaf damage too :). If you want to treat for scale: use isopropyl alcohol diluted in water. 3 water to 1 alcohol. I use isopropyl at 99%, but 70 or above works! I used a q-tip for my baby ficus that has scale really bad :,). Let me know if you have any questions! Best of luck! π«π± beautiful plant !! Hehehe :)
@Floristsdaisy ooooh!!! What an excellent advisory!! Expert advice in the chat! @Plantguy2025 π€©π± I never knew about the honey- would you say Manouka Honey or any ? And cinnamon too? EEK! #deathbycinnamon @RealSimpleMama ππ€©π₯³
@Floristsdaisy wow! Thank you I will try the honey trick to see if itβll help. But the damage is done? Would it be better to just cut the leaf off completely?
Iβm new to this and donβt wanna mess up. Thankfully I found this app!
Cutting the leaf off, would it affect the rest of the plant at all?

Hahaha, @Prentyce. I grow orchids so learned a few tricks here and there that I apply to other plants.
@Conner: welcome to the plants and the app's communities. It's better to cut the leaf, your plant is healthy looking and fast growing, so soon you'll be treaming it yourself to keep it small or so that your neighbors could have it too, π
@Floristsdaisy went ahead and cut it. Should I try to see if I can do anything with it? Like put it in some water to see if itβll grow anymore or should I just throw the leaf out?
May be a dumb question, but just curious before I dump it

Hey guys, sorry after I cut the leaf, I saw this. Any ideas? Still healthy? @Prentyce @Floristsdaisy
@Floristsdaisy OOOhhh!!! YES!π€©π± please I just ordered a jewel orchid I need all the advisory π€©π±β¨π³
@Plantguy2025: if you're referring to "scratches" on the leaf and leaf's stem - those are fine. It's already self-healed. It's the wet and mooshy that you want to pay attention. The cut looks clean. Looks good
@Plantguy2025 that was my only worry about it .. it looks like scale π₯Ήπ€·π± let me tag some pest control folks. Iβve got a full blown outbreak again ππ± got some new plants w itβ¦ here are some Golden Pothos & Brazilian photos of mine I think have scale for reference ! Any ideas expert pals ?? :)π€©π± @TheOddAsity @RealSimpleMama @UltraKoreanfir @SuperbRaspfern @WelsomeRhodotus
@Prentyce: oh, nice. Sure. I am not on everyday but when I am on ask away. I'll share what I know. Plus you're in a good hands. There are numerous orchid experts here on the app, just in case my response is delayed. π
Is that your first orchid plant?

@Prentyce hi @Plantguy2025 do the brown things come off when you squish them with your fingernail?
@Floristsdaisy yes!! It is!! But I do have Kiki paste?? π₯Ή and orchid bark! Hahah :) and Moss!! This is the one I got, please correct me if itβs not at all an orchid π€©π₯Ήπ±
Yes if @Prentyce is concern about scales, please follow up to ensure the plant is safe.
I don't know much about scales

@WelsomeRhodotus a tiny piece came off , but it was kinda like old skin and the bigger brown spot is firm and not wet, squishy or anything. Feels like itβs healed or somewhat healthy.
@Floristsdaisy yes Iβm with @WelsomeRhodotus def check if they squish off :) itβs how I learned about my bugs π€·π₯Ήππ€£π«£ BAHAHAH ahhh plant parenthood! Feels like a small equivalent to a baby blowout π€£π€·π€
@Plantguy2025 oh no thatβs like a dead root or like a leaf string thingy β¦ idk the science terms π€£π± right ? @WelsomeRhodotus
@Prentyce: please create a separate thread so not to shift focus from Jaykob' resolution to his question.
The short answer is yes, it is an orchid, yet it's up to debate between many... Some quick tips

@Prentyce @Plantguy2025 could be my eyesight but Iβm just seeing sticks :) If you have brown spots on your leaves that are about 1mm to 2 or 3mm and oval shaped, you can try squishing it with your fingernail and if it squishes and or releases a bit of liquid, thatβs scale right there.
