Any advice for String of Turtles? π I can't let this one ...
My #StringofTurtles was a gift from friends at the floral shop I worked at years ago... they special ordered a pack of String of Turtles near the end of my employment because I talked so much about how I wanted one. They also said that I can never kill it or they'll find me! π

All said, I would really like to keep this boy going. π He had a rough few years with several moves, lost several vines when my new-at-the-time cat knocked my plant shelf over, then he got sunburned when I was trying to encourage more growth and had him in a bright spot. About 6 months ago, I took a jump and cut him up to propagate him in this small pot at my office. I used a spray bottle to water him initially, with deep soaks every few weeks or so.
Today is watering day, so I pulled him down and noticed he had a pretty dry crust of soil on top (pic in my plant gallery). I carefully broke it up a bit ago and spotted new growth! It seems like there's some new delicate roots as well?
I don't want to jinx myself or get too excited that I end up doing damage. Would it be smart to move him closer to the window so he can get better light? It's south-facing but the light doesn't come directly in because of the roof-line.
All advice is welcome! This is one of my near-and-dear plants, so I definitely want to hear the best care tips. π₯°

Yay to new growth!!! I do suggest getting it some more light! That has definitely helped my string of turtles bounce back. I hope you are bottom watering! This will help the turtles to not rot from wet soil. The only other thing I can think of is also a more shallow pot once the roots are more established. The root systems on string of turtles is very shallow. But I understand waiting just because they were just stressed with the move. You got this!!! Also, if you accidentally break any stems, they do really well making new roots if stuck back in the soil or on water!!! Same with the little leaves! Iβm propagating some now and none of the 30 leaves have died and itβs been 3 weeks! Best of luck!!
@GnarlyJacaranda Thanks for all the good info! I was wondering how deep of a pot I needed (do you happen to know if shallow roots are the same for String of Dolphins? π
)
I was misting with a spray bottle to help them develop roots while propagating at the top of the soil, but with this new growth I think I'll definitely switch to bottom watering to encourage root growth!
Do you have recommendations on temperature? My window is right above a baseboard heat/ac that is sometimes blasting cold air... have you had luck with heating pads? I recently was reading about those for root growth but I'm not sure...

I've given up on all succulent string plants. It's been a year of purchasing new ones to replace the ones that died. That's expensive and not the joy I experience from plant care. I'm sticking to tried and true from now on. It's like an addiction. I go to a seller, see a beautiful string plant, and just before I'm ready to click "checkout" I close the window. I envy all those who enjoy their amazing tendrils.

Hey! Same for string of bananas. If you have a terracotta pot with a drainage hole, even better! Oooh you want to move the string away from cold air and drafts. The air there is drier and strings are tropical plants that like humidity. I would stop misting them because it can cause lead rot in succulent leaves. No heating pad necessary. As long as the temperature isnβt cold, theyβre fine at room temp
