This just happened to my moms due to spider mites. Have you checked in between the leaves for fine webbing? Or any signs of pests?
Did you money tree die or dwarf umbrella? The pictures show a dwarf umbrella.
Money tree? That's Pachira
Yours show a dwarf umbrella tree, a Schefflera
If it was the dwarf umbrella show I suspect root rot if you look at the roots they are likely brown and mushy. That’s why your leaves turned yellow. Even the Gold Capella I have has dark green mixed with the gold color. You can propagate these though if you want to make a new one cut below a node and stick it in water with the node covered with water πŸ’¦ within 3 months new roots will form. These can be slow to root but they will if kept in water long enough. ( That’s why I have a dozen of them). You can also possibly save your tree if it’s rot by cutting off all the brown or mushy parts and treating the rest with 1 part peroxide/ 3 parts water. Also treat your pot with this mix and use fresh soil.

Now if your talking about a braided money tree look for a rubber band below the soil and cut if off, it will be hidden. Most have them and they need to be cut off or else the band will strangle the tree and they eventually die. πŸ’•
