Over or underwatering ?

For the First Time I am using a porrus pot (terractota) for my also first #Hoya plant.

But she is not happy : Leaves are turning mushy and brown, and eventually fall.
The soil is very dry, but the terracotta pot confuses me.

Any advice ?

@QualityBaybean the surroundings have to be humid. I live in Utah, our relative humidity is like 20%. I bought about 5 Hoyas and they all started to shrivel and I didn’t know why and I searched and searched and found humidity is the issue. I bought a hygrometer and this tiny humidifier and within like 5 days they were plumping up and looking better. My humidity has to be a MINIMUM of 35% otherwise they shrivel. 35% only works when I have multiple plants clustered together. I have a few leaves that were damaged and have stayed slightly shriveled. But I’m just saying, if you have central air in your home GET A humidifier and put your plant near it. I can take a picture of my setup if you’d like. @PoisedAlbo lives in humidity hell where she could probably have mushrooms grow in her carpet. So she has no idea what it’s like to be diligent about humidity (love you Audrey!! 😘)
@QualityBaybean I have all my Hoya in clear plastic pots. I do use terracotta pots but only for pothos and my peace lily. My Hoya kroniana black was doing the same thing that yours says, and I found it was from not enough sunlight oh and bottom water they like to be bottom watered. This is what I have my Publicalyx in 😊
humidity. Hoyas are humidity DEPENDENT. They’re epiphytes and absorb most of their moisture through their leaves. They cannot absorb what is needed through their roots.
@TheOddAsity oh ! So I should keep the pot moist to keep the surounding humid enough ?
@TheOddAsity you crack me up πŸ˜‚ April love ❀️ you too and you’re exactly right hell my carpet sweat half the time οΏΌ
I think you may be dry rotting the roots here, thus the very confusing symptoms of both over and under watering.
I agree with @PoignantAlbo sometimes my Hoyas do this and I believe it to be an inconsistent water issue. Usually one of the last leaves on the vine… where the water goes to last. I don’t bottom water my Hoyas. I do have several bunches together to increase humidity and if they are lucky I may spray my plant section the air really good in the summertime… not sure if that makes a difference in humidity levels but I am convinced they like it! I think Terra cotta sucks up moisture from the medium so I too use plastic pots. I do have a few in ceramic with drainage and I water those less frequently. Put your Publix on a schedule and see if that solves your mushy leaves. The rest of your plant looks great!!! I love the Publix Hoyas they grow so beautifully! Hope this helps you!!
