I have been checking my plants relentlessly, and I notice this , today I don’t remember this being there yesterday? Any ideas?

@Louisxvi that’s what I’m hear for, angel 🀍🀍

I wish I had photos of the thrips battle I went through. My sis bought me a GORGEOUS, MASSIVE monstera before she moved away. Within 3 months, 25 leaves went down to 3. The plant is now coming back, but very slowly. That thrips infestation was BAD. And I got rid of them, there is absolutely hope for you!!!
Hello! Unfortunately, I think this may be a pest issue but it’s hard to say what for sure by the small black spots..

I’m attaching a photo of a diy pesticide recipe that we often recommend here on Greg to combat many indoor houseplant pests!

If you have other plants, I’d recommend isolating this one until you don’t suspect further pest issues!
@elisenavidad the little black spots literally fall off when I touch the plant I thought I was dirty, I just washed the leaves off and all those black spots came off, I do have new leaf growing could this possibly be the plant killing off old leaves I’m looking and this seems to be one of her first leaves?
@elisenavidad this is the leaf after I washed it
@Louisxvi it could be an older leaf but by the formation of the yellow spots I’m leaning towards a pest issue.

When older leaves die off, the entire leaf usually starts yellowing as a whole as well as the colors kind of fade away.. pests also tend to group / clump together on the undersides of leaves! Not all of them will fall off as easy like dust, but some do. It’s always good to treat as a precaution! That’s just me though 😌
@elisenavidad okay I will be treating I was planing to do so anyway, it’s just odd that it’s only this plant , I had a similar issue happening with my pink one and after removing the leaf everything seem to be fine, because the plants do look so clean it’s the only leaf that had any issues and all the leaves had some dirt on it, I’m just trying not to be so paranoid about the pest but this kinda struck me this morning.
@elisenavidad can I just mix neem oil and alcohol , I have cats and all that its going to be highly undooable for me because one of them is asthmatic and sensitive to smells.
@Louisxvi You can absolutely use neem and alcohol & I’d use that too! It’s better than nothing in my opinion!
@elisenavidad this plant was in the bathroom and never left my bathroom, as I safe for today to treat the bathroom plants and move on to the next tomorrow? Also I moved these two plants into my room from the bathroom but they’re sereprated from the rest do you think I’m safe to leave these here for today? And thank you so much for your help I really appreciate you, if only doing neem and alcohol what amount would you mix into the water in this case?
The black dots you mentioned could be thrips. The black specks are their poop. I hope for your sake it's not thrips, because they're a major headache to deal with πŸ˜‘
@stephonicle would I see the actual bugs ? 😭
Looking more closely at the leaf damage (plus the black specks that fall off when you touch them), I'm unfortunately leaning toward thrips 🫀 they lay their eggs inside leaf tissue, and when the eggs hatch they begin eating their way through the leaf, which causes very similar looking damage.
@stephonicle omg I just saw a actually bug on the ones that I moved into my room … idk if it’s was a fly of what ever but it was on this plant…
@Louisxvi not necessarily. I had thrips on several tradescantia despite never once seeing an adult thrip. They have several life stages, from newly hatched eggs to pups to larvae to adult, but you can usually only see the larvae and adults with the naked eye. Adult thrips are long, slender, darker color winged insects. Larvae stage thrips will look like a bunch of tiny white/tan dots scurrying around on the leaves.
@stephonicle ya I think that’s what I saw I’m crying right now it was near my clothes what do I do about that?
If it is thrips, you'll need more than neem oil and alcohol to get rid of them. You'll have to keep the plant in isolation for at least a month and treat it every few days to ensure you get all the life stages. Even if you think they're gone after a few weeks, there could be eggs in the leaf tissue waiting to hatch, then you're back to square one. I alternated between insecticidal soap and Capt Jack's DeadBug Brew, they worked like a charm. It doesn't look like a very extensive infestation, so you might even be able to get away with just insecticidal soap.
@stephonicle what if I throw out those plants how can I tell if my other plants are going to be okay I had just moved some from the bathroom to my room and now I’m worried about the plants it was near, and my clothes.
@stephonicle that’s what I was thinking too…but the circular shape threw me off
@elisenavidad so I actually saw one I took the 3 plants that I suspected are the problem outside they all lived together in the bathroom and I moved the two other ones in my bedroom this weekend, the one that I saw a postal bug was further away from the other plants I have, but I didn’t take chances I moved the one that was nearest to the other plants and all three are outside, I cleaned the pot they were in with alcohol and put them aside and then I had a spider plant in the bathroom I actually washed it took it out of the roots and sprayed the whole thing with alcohol and neem oil and it’s isolated in the bathroom with my philodendron that I also sprayed but was sitting higher up. My succulents look fine they were higher up near the Phillip but I also sprayed them. I have some snake plant and Philo cuttings propagating should I discard of them?
@Louisxvi as long as you don’t see signs of pests on the cuttings, you should be fine! A lot of them prefer the plants that are in soil rather than water - it’s still worth a check though!
@elisenavidad thank you so much for your help I truly appreciate it!! You saved me from a complete mental breakdown and thank you @stephonicle as well πŸ˜πŸ’•
@Louisxvi dude I COMPLETELY understand πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

You got this though, this is how you gain experience 😈
@Louisxvi S T F U.
@Louisxvi I have the chills and I am fuming for you. That could be a huge freaking problem.
@elisenavidad I cried all night… I had to throw out over 15 plants, I’m still in tears I can’t thank you enough Elise you really helped me yesterday but I’m really not doing well with this 😭😭😭😭
@elisenavidad I can’t stop crying, I’ve been going through a lot of bad times in my life and these plants have been the one thing I can grow and they made me happy and they helped me so much, I feel like I just lost the war…
Most people get pissed off on this app when I recommend this product, however it’s the only product that saved my collection & im not using it on my food garden so I simply do not care. Girl, buy some of this stuff & follow the guide on the instructions as to how much for each plant. !!!!

SAVED. MY. LIFE.

(& my plants. Literally) https://a.co/d/6kdyU5O
Don’t throw them out yet. Don’t give up. It’s not all lost, you’re just in for a battle. The systemic granules will immensely help as well as should eradicate them. Again, the only thing I’ve found
@elisenavidad and they trying to act like this is a ant problem I’m gonna lose it, 30$ to buy product I guess … I’m crying Elise 😭😭😭
@elisenavidad I’m in Canada 😭😭😭😭 I legit have soap I can buy to fight this
Try this

https://a.co/d/dYglzKa
@Louisxvi okay imma see what I can find for you, that effing stupid but also that’s bc Canada cares more about their ppl so it makes sense why it’s not available there πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜‚
@elisenavidad I have cats!! 😭😭😭 the other issue I’m so scared to hurt them with all the chemicals
Cuz the shit is toxic AF
@Louisxvi if the cats aren’t getting into your soil you’re fine. I have a dog but she couldn’t be less interested in my plants.
@elisenavidad it’s like a love hate relationship with Canada bout that ahah I can’t even get my Korean sun screen here… even though it’s cleaner than everything on our market
@elisenavidad so they don’t get into the soil but they have mulched…… and my oldest cat is curious Paris for a reason I’d have to isolate in my bathroom, also I’m in a basement bachelors , a very big one but I don’t have much options for isolation! My grow tavle
@Louisxvi ZINC OXIDE FOR SUN SCREEN!!!! My mom is an all natural fanatic & finds alternatives for everything. 🀣
@elisenavidad YOU ALREADY KNOW BBG 😭🀣😭 you need to try the beauty of Joseon sun relief, the original not the light weight it’s the cleanest thing on the market and I would eat it if I could! I can’t tell you how you’re cheered me up and gave me hope, I ordered this yesterday any thought?

https://a.co/d/8FIFjpp
@Louisxvi ohhhh I see.. okay so you can get rid of pests with insecticidal soap but it needs to be applied probably twice daily (am & pm) for a good month & then weekly from there assuming you don’t see signs of pests. These are things I have no problem doing bc it keeps me happy and my brain health, however some people don’t have that type of time on their hands and I get that!! Don’t give up, you’re just in for a big war against thripsπŸ˜‚
@elisenavidad so I’m actually self employed I run my own mobile hair stylist business I got the time, so if I’m consistent do you think success is realistic because this form the Canada Reddit threads seems to be the best bet here !
@elisenavidad also what do I do with the succulents dear lord , Jesus Christ himself is the only one who could make those clean again 😭
@Louisxvi Damn, go you girl!!! My sis is a nail tech & is trying to do the mobile thing. Go you guys!!

Yes, you absolutely have the time and I do feel it’s realistic, it just may take a few bottles of spray. A big kicker I’ve found is peppermint oil when added to the spray mix I make..thrips hate peppermint. Basically, if you continue to eradicate the larvae daily, they’re eventually not going to be able to reproduce.. it just takes a bit longer than other pests
@Louisxvi HAHA I KNOW RIGHT 🀣🀣🀣
@elisenavidad okay I’m on a mission THEY WILL NOT WIN THIS WAR, and I’m never buying a plant without putting it in ICU aka I’m getting a small grow tent to spray them for a month before they join the fam jam again!

Off we love girlies who decided to do their own thang!!! Big koodos to your sis it’s scary to go out on your own but wow is it rewarding once you get there πŸ’• thank you for all the kind words you truly brought my spirits up today!
@elisenavidad like I think I might just have. Funeral today for the succulents and accept the defeat on that one 😭🀣
@Louisxvi succulents are easier in my opinions because they can be drenched completely. Last summer I was gifted a gorgeous jade that had the worst thrip infestation I had ever seen in my life. I wasn’t deterred though πŸ˜‚ I filled a large bucket with insecticidal soap, filled the bucket with water and then literally put the whole pot in the bucket and covered every part of the plant until the soap started washing off the pests. Winded, repeated about 4 times until the plant looked good to the eye. Then I continued to spray it down daily (twice daily) for about two weeks and no joke, they were gone and not a problem again!!!
@elisenavidad Elise imma need your instagram handle or this app needs to get on the messaging because you have experience I need to keep picking from !!!! Goodness I’m doing that tomorrow , I’m gonna get a full on plastic suit to put over my clothes, this is Covid-thrips edition quarantine 2025 for these f***kers
@Louisxvi FOR SURE!!!

@elisenavidad again thank you I’m gonna be posting updates of my journey maybe I can help someone else like me who is clearly to emotional about plants and terrified of bugs 😭🀣🀍 God bless you girl

@stephonicle thank you for taking the time to write this πŸ˜πŸ’• I am on a mission now Elise and yourself has given me the hope I need to tackle this, yesterday I lost the worst of the bunch and some plants were simply just dying , but I have maybe 15 I’m gonna go on mission to save them… lost between 10-15 yesterday πŸ’” I will definitely be updating and posting my progress and journey! Thank you again ❣️
