Polka dot care tips please
My husband knows me well and didn't get me flowers for Valentine's Day, he got me a plant. More specifically he got me this super cute rose #polkadotplant because he's seen me looking at them multiple times in the past. I absolutely love her, BUT I have no idea how to best care for her, as I am primarily a succulent and aroid #plantmom lol. The nursery pot was utterly sopping wet even 24 hours after bringing her home and being sat in a sunny window all day tomorrow, so this morning I set it on paper towels to absorb some of the excess water out of the drainage holes, and there are short bits of roots coming out of pretty much all the drain holes. I suspect this may be at least somewhat due to the fact that the pot feels like it didn't get fully filled up with soil when it was potted up at the nursery, so I'm hoping I could just gently take her out, rearrange the roots and add some more soil rather than actually up-pot already? And what sort of potting mix do these guys like? I know they don't like to dry out all the way, similar to calatheas and peace lilies, so could I use a mix similar to what I've made for my drama queen plants?

I agree that polka dots donβt like to dry out. I have mine in an automatic watering pot (water in the bottom with strings to siphon it up into the soil). Mine thrives in this situation. I used normal potting soil with little to no perlite.
@BabeVila π Another plant with pink got you!! ππͺ΄
@Julhigbee ooh, that looks gorgeous! Are the roots growing down into the water as well or is that just the string?
I definitely made the mistake of letting mine dry out too much and lost a couple, but fortunately have stabilized now with more frequent water and all three colors I got (separated them out from the same pot, they also did not appreciate me messing with the roots so much) have at least one happy survivor!

@Basementdweller yes, a few roots made it down into the reservoir as well!
@Basementdweller I have a silver sword in a self watering setup because he's in a very chunky mix (I'm growing him up a moss pole that gets watered every other day and needed a mix at the base that would tolerate/drain that much moisture, and some of the roots are growing out of the pot in mine as well π The roots will always go after the water, no doubt
@Julhigbee oooh I've looked at pots like that on Amazon but not had any plants small enough for them that would be happy with them (except apparently this one and maybe my ctenanthe that has exploded in size and will need a repot this spring). Finally an excuse to try them! π
@SunnyPlants haha I have 4 of these now!! I love them! They are definitely drama queens. They do not like to dry out, and they are the only plants I have in pots without drainage. Even so, I still have to water every 3-4 days. They donβt like direct sunlight, so careful or the leaves will crisp right up. I have all of mine in a north facing window and theyβre happy as clams π€ @RelentlessZebra your husband did good!
@SunnyPlants haha only after first putting it in a pot with drainage, and wondering why it kept drying up so fast π€£ now I get a 3-4 day window between watering and them getting all dramatic and wilting lmao
@RelentlessZebra Beautiful plant @Julhigbee thanks I now know why all of my polka dot plants died. Iβm getting some of those pots and placing an order for some more
I recently added 2 of these lovelies to my oasis at work and they were in dire need of repotting because the roots were overgrown and coming out of the holes. We repotted into 6β pots w indoor potting soil along w some sand and small stones in thee bottom for proper drainage. They get sunny window visits 3x a week for 3+ hours and are otherwise in the office under the flourescent lights. Theyβre doing quite well π
This was how I bought them which was really cute presentation wise but they were already outgrowing the pot and soaked like your grocery store rescues . Iβll post another pic of them after I get to the office. I would suggest maybe a new pot but maybe see how it doeses withh the other suggestions.
