All the best #repotting tips

Good morning! I got my first #PlantMail of 2024 and I know I’ve struggled in the past with repotting plants. I think it has to do with watering, so tell me what you think.

when I’m ready to repot a plant, I pick a pot that is only slightly bigger. Most of my house plants are not huge so we are talking about a 1 inch increase in diameter. I make my own really chunky soil mix that I use for almost almost everybody, snake plants get succulent mix, and I am going to try a new #cococoir mix from #BrosWithHoes on a few new #Alocasia because hey it was free!

But I am worried about is that plants who were thriving, growing amazingly, beautiful new growth, and getting root bound, start to suffer as soon as I repot them. I know I am not breaking roots, the pot is not too big and it always has drainage, so my guess is I’m probably waiting too long to water them. I’m just so afraid of root rot because I lost a lot of plants early on in my journey.

Do you water as soon as you repot? Do you use a special fertilizer to transition? I do bottom water everyone EXCEPT I’m starting to top water my #Monstera. I don’t have a pest nor a humidity problem, I’m just racking my brain and my heart is sick over this! I’m getting repot phobia, yall! πŸŒ±β˜€οΈβ€οΈ

They need time to adjust! All of mine, whenever i repot, look bad for a few days before perking back up. I typically let them dry out before repotting, repot, then water them a day later and only give them half of what i usually do, going back to normal once they need it :)

Hello Sarah!
You put into wonderful detail, all of the questions that I also have about repoting! Thanks so much.
I have (or should I say, she has me) a baby False Ariela in the same situation ❀️
@RealSimpleMama for what it’s worth…

I repot immediately. I do not wait. Do not pass go. I have lost too many plants because I believe what they come in is too dense and suffocating the roots.

Ever since I switched to #cococoir I don’t have root rot issues. And like you, I make a super chunky mix that uses 1 part coco coir, 10 parts coco chips, 10 parts chunky perlite, and like 1/4 part charcoal.

When I repot (I repotted about 15 plants yesterday and I too have repotting phobia over a recent plague I brought home). I use the chunky mix and before pressing down to make sure it’s all secure… I water it and if the water runs through in seconds, then I have the right combo and I tamp down the soil a little more and it’s good.
I totally understand your concern! It sounds like you have a great system for your soil mix and watering. When I repot, I usually water right away to help the plant settle into its new home. I also use some osmocote fertilizer in my soil mix. it exists a special liquid ferilizer to help with the transition that I’m curious to try in the future. It’s normal to be worried about root rot, but if you’re using well-draining soil and pots with drainage, you’re already doing great.
Don’t worry too much, it’s all part of the learning process. Repotting can be nerve-wracking, but your plants will thank you for it in the long run. Hang in there!
