Under-watering or over-watering? π΅
Hey #greggang!
As you know #cacti and #succs are NOT my thing. I always get worried because they are doing nothing, then I get worried I'm overwatering them so I end up under watering them. It's a whole thing π
So. Here is my latest predicament. My #boobiecactus. It came unrooted. I made a cactus mix that's basically sand, pumice, and a little soil. It was in plastic and I'd bottom water it when it started to feel soft. I transferred it to terracotta and moved it to the sunniest window once winter was over and have watered once since. This time it didn't get firm again after watering. Since then it's started to get squishy and turn a little yellow.
Soft/wrinkly/more sun makes me think under-watered.
Soft/yellowing/squishy makes me think over-watered.
I haven't watered it in several weeks and nothing has changed. I figured I should pull it to check and the base that was in the soil is the firmest part. There are very few roots, but I think it had this few when I got it... Maybe π€ I removed some of the soil but didn't want to mess with the roots more. The ones I can see are white.
So, what do you say #cactusclique? Do I stick it back in the soil and let it get a good bottom water, or leave it out and let it dry out?

IDK specific advice as I'm still trying not to kill mine either. I lost some because I forgot them bottom watering. I have switched all my cacti and succulents with roots to :
Jacks Gritty Mix
Bonsai soil
Sand
Perlite
Miracle Gro cactus and succulent soil
That mix has seemed to help the ones struggling. I also switched them all to clear pots so I can see watering and roots.
I wonder if you can cut off the bottom, let it callous and then try to prop and establish healthy roots

Thanks @AwesomePlants, @WayoutRanch and @SirLiquorice!
I ended up adding a little more soil to my mix since everything felt bone dry. Then I planted it and gave it a long bottom soak. It's definitely more firm but idk if it'll come all the way back or not.
My gut said underwatered but again, I don't trust it with cacti so I appreciate the input!
