I was just gifted my first string of hearts! I am so exci...

0ft to light, indirect

3β pot with drainage

Last watered 1 year ago
Make sure the base of the plant gets as much bright light as possible. It can handle direct sun when acclimated properly. Don't water until leaves get wrinkly. If kept indoors water on the light side always so the soil won't stay wet too long. If your hearts get further apart it's bc it needs more light.make sure soil drains fast. Mine is chunky but smaller chunks.
@soupycare ooo okay! How do you know it is a more mature leaf? Just size?
@KrunchyWrapz when you say on the light side, do you mean only water a little bit? Or water where the water hits the pot the most?
@Monstera001 typically they are thicker and closer to the base of the plant. They can be bigger or smaller. But mine always feel thicker
@Monstera001 sorry where the *light* hits the most
@Monstera001 I typically water mine once a week but I think she's a little root bound
@Monstera001 Hi Julia! Welcome to Greg ππΌ π π
@KrunchyWrapz is spot on!
It can definitely take some direct light but make sure to acclimate the plant slowly mine is in some direct and some" dappled sun-light" right next to a south-east facing window and another two east facing windows that are shaded by a giant palm tree and a southern building.
I added a grow light about 12 inches away on the other side of the plant so I don't have to constantly be worried about rotating it.
I am still trying to tweak the fertilization and schedule of watering for optimal leaf thickness... Since I've only had mine for 3 months but it's growing insanely fast!
I repotted mine a month after I got it it into better soil and now I water it about every 8-10 days but my climate is dry and it's getting a ton of light.
@KrunchyWrapz Your misting tip is a good one!
My SOH is a speed demon of growth but all the new growth is thinner than I'd like.
It's pretty dry in house, so I'm going to try missing in the evenings now. π π Thank you!
Going to have to propigat a new plant out of the strings pretty soon because if they get too long the cats will mess with them, so I'm looping the strings back around hooking them on each other π

@roxyvivien oh wow thanks for all the details! You said something about leaf thickness. There is a way to get thicker leaves? And itβs just through watering?
@Monstera001 from my extensive research I have not found anything conclusive on how to get the leaves thicker.... all I know is the nursery leaves were thicker than the new growth I'm getting right now but after repotting a plant it's expected that it'll go through a time of transition...
I'll report back about the misting because the top of my pot is not wrinkled and dry it's only the new growth hanging down is a bit thin, so @KrunchyWrapz might have landed on a pro tip for low humidity environments.

@roxyvivien @Monstera001 I found this link really helpful

There is no set schedule that will work for watering. You absolutely need to check the soil. The plantβs environment changes as we go through the seasons so there will be times when they typically need less water such as in winter and times when itβs sunny and hot when theyβll dry more quickly and need more frequent watering.
One way to check the moisture in the soil is to use a wooden skewer. Stick it into the pot all the way to the bottom. If it comes ot with dirt clinging to it it is still moist and you should check again in a couple of days. If it comes out clean (like when youβre testing cake with a toothpick) it needs a thorough drink.
Overwatering is the most common reason succulents die. If you master watering youβre most of the way to a happy plant. πππ
Enjoy that plant! I love strings! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ
