Tell me your repotting process
Just curious to know everyone's repotting process.
I'm going to be repotting/replacing the soil of all 80+ plants I have next week after my landlord has been for a flat inspection and it got me thinking about what everyone usually does.
Give me your tips and tricks π, I usually end up in a mess covered in soil on the floor in my kitchen with a bad back π.

Hi! 80 plants in one go.. ouch! I have tried to deal with the sore back situation by setting up a table where I can do my potting. I place a potting mat down to keep things tidy-ish and place a big tub next to it. In the tub, I mix up my substrate, potting up each plant one by one on the potting mat. And then take off and bring to the sink/bathtub/ outside to water in :) πΏπΏπΏ
@PlantPeach First and foremost it is important to have all your supplies ready and at hand. Because once you get started and you realize βOh sh*tβ I forgot such and such. And you have to go get it. That throws a monkey wrench in your plans. Other than that itβs just straight forward get everything ready pots, soil, tools, rooting hormone, cover any surface to prevent the worst mess. And have at it! I normally donβt water the right after repotting. I let the roots recover from the stress a day or two before watering. And for cacti itβs usually 3-5 days. But 80 plants in one go? You should have a repotting Party, invite some like minded friends/neighbors to help??
@WelsomeRhodotus I might have to sit at a table as well because last time my back killed for days afterwards π
@Ms.Persnickety That's such a good suggestion, I always end up forgetting something just as I'm ready to get started π. I might make a list of all the things I will need beforehand so I know I have everything before I start.
I also might take on your advice about leaving the plants to settle for a few days before watering, I usually water straight away and I find that sometimes it can be a bit much for them especially since the substrate they go into is already a little moist. So I will try leaving them a few days this time and seeing if that helps with their stress.
I'd love it if someone could help me. And technically I could get my boyfriend to help me but also I just know he'd do something wrong π and he's a serial plant killer, so I'd rather suffer and do them all myself than risk loosing one of them to my boyfriends negative plant energy π

@PlantPeach is it possible to space out your repotting so that you do maybe 20 plants on one day instead of 80?
@PlantPeach if youve got the time try and space it out over the day π.
I have one of the black trays from the garden centre that i fill will soil from the bag and have a small pot to scoop. And pot in the tray to "try" and contain the mess π
For the back find a height that works or you, on a table/worktop/ or sitting on the floor thats what i do.
I have found some success with keeping the plant in old pot and putting soil around it in the new pot then taking out and adding a bit more. If you can break it up into number of plants or steps might be less of a hassle.
Also maybe im wierd that I like these kinds of repetitive jobs and just put some nice music on and zone out π.
Good luck π€

@debbiedo I'm repotting and changing soil of all, so not all are going up a pot size but all need a soil change to replace nutrients as its been a long time since this was last done ππ
@WelsomeRhodotus I could space them out, but that would mean having a bunch of plants/soil etc lying around the house. Orrrr it would mean tidying it all away each time. (And I'm quite lazy π) I only live in a one bed flat atm so I don't think my boyfriend would be impressed if he came home one day to a kitchen full of plants and soil that couldn't be used until I was finished potting up ππ.
@PlantPeach how about doing it by plant type so prepping the soil mix needed for specific types of plants and just potting up the amount that fit into one tub worth of mix?
@TheLonelyDaff That's a good idea, weirdly I do exactly that technique for potting up my outdoor plants but have never done that for my houseplants. I have no idea why, π will definitely start doing that for the houseplants though because it does make things so much easier in the long run
80 plants! Wow. Thatβs a lot! This is probably obvious, but I have used a potting mat in the past, and I still end up with a huge mess, so now I always make sure to cover my table/surface with some old beach towels (they are bigger). They catch the soil, and are easy to clean up because I just shake them out and throw them in the wash. I even throw down towels on watering day because even with trays, I still end up with dirt everywhere when I take out the nursery pots. I hate sweeping π€£
