Pachira aquatica are often treated as bonsai-esque and are thus trimmed and trained accordingly. However, the best time to do so is during its active growing season, which is typically in the spring and summer. Pruning helps to encourage fuller growth, control the plant's size, and remove any damaged or yellowing foliage.
You may consider braiding the upper branches to start to train them. Just put a Velcro strap around them. Here’s a tutorial. https://youtu.be/BHZweFcQFgw?si=3DinmDhaZAYT7CK7. I recently braided mine and it’s super happy and less bushy.
